Indians try to salvage finale with Mariners

(Sports Network) - The Cleveland Indians have dropped back-to-back games since ripping off 10 consecutive wins, and will try to salvage the finale of a three-game series today versus the Seattle Mariners at Progressive Field.

The Indians had the streak stopped with Friday's 3-2 loss in the series opener, then suffered a 4-3 setback in 10 innings on Saturday. Shin-Soo Choo homered and knocked in a pair of runs for the Indians, who are also searching for their first win on this six-game homestand.

Grady Sizemore had two hits and Jhonny Peralta drove in the other Cleveland run, as the Indians fell to 36-31 at home this season. The Tribe will also host the Chicago White Sox on the current homestand.

Zach Jackson will make his fourth start for the Indians on Sunday since being acquired from Milwaukee in the CC Sabathia deal. Jackson is 0-0 with a 4.91 earned run average in three outings so far with Cleveland, and did not factor in the outcome of a 4-3 win over Detroit on August 25.

The left-hander allowed three runs on two homers and seven total hits in 6 1/3 innings of work. Jackson will try to rebound in his first-ever appearance against the Mariners this afternoon.

Seattle is trying for its first three-game sweep since June 27-29 this season at San Diego. It has won two straight and six of its last eight games, including Saturday's late-inning victory. Raul Ibanez and Jamie Burke each singled home runs in the 10th inning for the Mariners, who are unbeaten so far on a six-game road trip and 24-42 away from the Emerald City.

Ibanez and Ichiro Suzuki each had three hits and scored once, while starter Jarrod Washburn did not record a decision after pitching 6 2/3 shutout innings. J.J. Putz earned the win in relief despite allowing two runs and Randy Messenger later recorded an out for his first save of the season.

Taking the ball for the M's on Sunday will be Ryan Rowland-Smith, who is 3-2 with a 3.73 earned run average in 41 games (six starts) this season. Rowland- Smith last pitched on August 26 versus Minnesota and beat the Twins with seven strong innings of two-run ball. He has gone at least seven innings in consecutive starts.

The southpaw is 0-0 with a 1.69 ERA over 5 1/3 innings in his career against the Indians.

Seattle and Cleveland have split eight meetings so far this season, but the Tribe is 7-6 over the previous 13 matchups with the Mariners.
