Tue 1st, May 2007

Houston, TX (Sports Network) - Ken Griffey, Jr. went 3-for-3 with a solo home run, two RBI and two runs scored as Cincinnati tied its season-high for runs in a game with an 11-2 drubbing of Houston in the opener of a three-game set between the clubs at Minute Maid Park.

Adam Dunn was 2-for-4 with a double, a three-run homer, and scored three times for the Reds, who have won three straight games and outhit the Astros 15-5. Alex Gonzalez doubled and homered and scored a pair of runs, while Scott Hatteberg scored twice. Bronson Arroyo (1-2) scattered three hits and one run over seven innings to record his first win of the season, fanning five but walking three. Jon Coutlangus gave up a run in two-thirds of an inning, but Todd Coffey and Brad Salmon closed out the game by hurling 1 1/3 frames of scoreless ball. Craig Biggio tripled and scored two runs for the Astros, losers in nine of 10. Lance Berkman and Luke Scott were responsible for driving in their only runs. Matt Albers (0-1) gave up eight hits and six runs -- three earned, over 2 1/3 innings, Trever Miller was dented for four hits and four runs in one inning of relief, and Brad Lidge surrendered a run in his 1 2/3 innings. The Reds put two on the board in the second, as Mike Lamb's error on Brandon Phillips' ground ball with the bases loaded permitted Dunn and Edwin Encarnacion to score. Griffey opened the third inning with a long home run to right to make it 3-0. It was his second of the season, and 565th career long ball, moving two ahead of Reggie Jackson on the all-time list. Gonzalez stretched the advantage to 4-0 in the following at-bat with his solo shot to left, and David Ross' RBI single boosted the lead to 5-0. Josh Hamilton knocked in a run with a base hit for a 6-0 game. Houston got a run back in the fourth on Scott's sacrifice fly, but Griffey's second RBI of the game brought home Hatteberg in the sixth. Dunn added to the Astros' misery with a three-run blast to right which pushed the Reds advantage to 10-1, then Encarnacion was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the eighth to push across another run. Biggio tripled to lead off the bottom of the frame, and came home on Berkman's single up the middle to cap the scoring.
