Boston, MA (Sports Network) - Robinson Cano homered and finished with three RBI on three hits to lead the New York Yankees over the Boston Red Sox, 10-3, in the second matchup of a three-game set at Fenway Park.
Bobby Abreu drove in two runs on a pair of hits for the Yankees, who have won eight straight games.
"I love the way we're playing," said Yankees manager Joe Girardi. "Obviously, we know that were chasing teams and we have a lot of road games and we're going to have to win on the road. And we're going to have to take care of our own field, too. Win series and things should work out."
In his Bronx Bomber debut, Xavier Nady scored a run, but was hitless in three at-bats. On Friday, the Yankees acquired the outfielder and pitcher Damaso Marte from the Pittsburgh Pirates in exchange for pitchers Ross Ohlendorf, Jeff Karstens and Daniel McCutchen along with outfield prospect Jose Tabata.
Marte came in to face one batter in his debut and struck out David Ortiz in the seventh.
J.D. Drew homered for the Red Sox, who dropped their second straight on the heels of a three-game win streak.
Andy Pettitte (12-7) has won seven of his last nine matchups after only allowing one earned run in six innings of work in this one. The southpaw surrendered three total runs, five hits and three walks, while striking out seven.
Tim Wakefield (6-8) took the loss after getting tagged for six runs in 5 1/3 innings. The knuckleballer also gave up eight hits and four walks, while striking out three.
The Yankees trailed 2-1, but posted a two-run fourth to grab a 3-2 edge and they led the rest of the way. Cano led off with a homer to center on an 0-1 pitch to rattle Wakefield. Then, Melky Cabrera reached on a one-out bunt single before stealing second with two outs. Cabrera would come around on an RBI single up the middle by Johnny Damon.
New York exploded for four runs in the sixth to take a commanding 7-2 advantage. Nady led off with a walk and moved to third courtesy of a Cabrera double to left. Jose Molina was hit by a pitch to load the bases with no outs for Damon, who reached on a fielder's choice which plated Nady and chased Wakefield from the game.
Justin Masterson didn't fare any better as he yielded an RBI single up the middle by Derek Jeter that brought in Cabrera. Damon then crossed the plate on an Abreu double and Jeter scampered home on a base hit by Alex Rodriguez.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Red Sox got one run back as Drew belted his 19th homer of the season, a solo shot to right that made it a 7-3 affair.
"Besides J.D. taking one of the prettiest swings you'll ever see, other than that, we didn't have a whole lot going," said Red Sox manager Terry Francona.
The Yankees capped off their scoring with three runs in the eighth. Molina led off with a walk, Abreu drew a two-out walk and Rodriguez was hit by a Javier Lopez pitch to load the bases. Molina was forced in when Jason Giambi followed with another walk and Cano then doubled in Abreu and Rodriguez with a shot to center.
The Yankees outhit Boston, 13-6.
The Red Sox jumped on the board right away with two runs in the first. Dustin Pedroia reached base thanks to a fielding error by Rodriguez. After advancing to second on a Kevin Youkilis walk, Pedroia came around on a single by David Ortiz. Youkilis then raced home as Manny Ramirez hit into a fielder's choice which nailed Ortiz at second.
Ramirez returned to the lineup for the first time in three games due to right knee soreness, but was hitless in four at-bats.
New York got on the board with a run in the third to cut the deficit to 2-1. Molina drew a lead-off walk and moved to second on a wild pitch before racing to the plate via an RBI single to right by Abreu.
