Isles try to solve road woes in Calgary

Thu 8th, January 2009

(Sports Network) - Luck is something the Islanders haven't had over their 13- game road losing streak. New York will try to halt that slide tonight at Pengrowth Saddledome against one of the hottest teams right now at home, the Calgary Flames.

New York is just 5-16-2 on the road this year and hasn't won as the visiting club since November 24 in Montreal. The Islanders, last in the NHL with just 28 points, have dropped the first three tests of their current four-game road trip and are now just two road setbacks shy of their franchise-record 15 consecutive defeats as the visiting team set from January 20-April 1, 1973.

The Islanders netted the first two goals of the game on Monday against Edmonton, but the Oilers responded with a pair of second-period goals before Andrew Cogliano scored the game-winning tally near the halfway mark of the third frame.

Blake Comeau and Kyle Okposo each lit the lamp for the Islanders, who have dropped five of their last six overall. Joey MacDonald stopped 23 shots in the loss.

New York skated without Doug Weight on Monday because of a lower right leg injury. The Islanders' leader in assists this season with 25, Weight is questionable for tonight.

So is netminder Rick DiPietro due to a groin ailment. New York's franchise netminder has been limited to only five games this year because of injury.

Should New York lose tonight, it would have to wait three weeks for another chance to halt its road skid. Following tonight's battle, the Islanders return home for five straight before playing in Atlanta on January 29.

The Flames will look to feast on the lowly Islanders tonight as they try to extend their season-high five-game home winning streak. Calgary kicked off a three-game homestand on Tuesday with a 5-2 win over the San Jose Sharks, the top team in the NHL right now with 63 points.

Daymond Langkow scored twice and Curtis Glencross, Mark Giordano and David Moss also posted goals for the Flames, who have captured six of their last seven games and lead the Northwest Division by three points over Vancouver. Miikka Kiprusoff stopped 26 shots in the victory, his league-leading 24th of the season.

Kiprusoff has never beaten the Islanders, going 0-1-1 with a tie and 2.87 goals against average in three meetings with them.

Tuesday's win improved the Flames to 14-4-3 as the host this year. Calgary hasn't fell in defeat at Pengrowth Saddledome since December 19 versus Chicago and wraps its residency next Tuesday versus St. Louis.

The Flames have lost their last two versus the Islanders, having not defeated them since January 6, 2004. However, Calgary has won 10 of the last 13 meetings in the series. New York has posted back-to-back wins in Calgary after losing six straight there.
