Ducks shoot for home-and-home sweep of Kings

Thu 8th, January 2009

(Sports Network) - The Anaheim Ducks will try to sweep their home-and-home series with the Los Angeles Kings tonight, as the two teams tangle at the Staples Center.

The Ducks hosted the Kings on Tuesday and notched a 3-1 victory for their third win in four games versus Los Angeles this season. Anaheim has also won five of six and nine of the last 11 meetings in the series and has won three of its last five in LA.

Sami Pahlsson, Bobby Ryan and Rob Niedermayer all scored in the victory, while Scott Niedermayer and Chris Pronger notched two assists each in helping the Ducks wrap a four-game homestand 2-1-1. Pronger has three points in four games versus the Kings this year, as does Ryan Getzlaf.

Anaheim, 9-7-2 on the road this year thanks to losses in six of its last eight as the visiting team, will return home right after this contest to begin a three-game homestand versus Tampa Bay on Friday.

Jonas Hiller needed to make only 17 saves in notching his second straight win. He was coming off a 2-0 shutout of Phoenix on Sunday, improving to 10-6-1 this season as a solid second option to entrenched starter Jean-Sebastien Giguere.

The Ducks will again be without Corey Perry due to his four-game suspension and will also skate minus Brad May tonight after trading the 37-year-old to Toronto on Wednesday for a sixth-round draft pick in 2010. The 37-year-old May, a member of the 2007 Stanley Cup champion Ducks, had played in 20 games for Anaheim this season, collecting five assists with 28 penalty minutes.

Erik Ersberg made 23 saves but still walked away with a loss for the Kings. It was his first start since December 15 because of a groin strain. He started in place of Jonathan Quick, who is suffering from flu-like symptoms.

Ersberg has allowed two goals or less in 12 of his 17 starts this year and is 8-6-2 with a 2.36 goals against average this year.

Quick, who is probable for tonight, is 3-2-0 over his last five outings with two shutouts and a 0.80 GAA.

Kyle Quincey scored the lone goal for the Kings against Anaheim, with Anze Kopitar and Jarret Stoll getting assists. Stoll has a goal and two helpers versus the Ducks this year, while Kopitar has three helpers.

Dustin Brown has two assists in four games against Anaheim this year and was named to the Western Conference All-Star club on Wednesday as a reserve. That squad features a trio of Ducks starters in Scott Niedermayer, Getzlaf and Giguere.

Los Angeles is 11-8-6 at home this year and begins a four-game residency tonight.
