Roy, Sabres continue Rangers' road struggles

Sat 21st, February 2009

uffalo, NY (Sports Network) - Derek Roy registered a goal and two assists, as the Buffalo Sabres extended the New York Rangers' road woes with a 4-2 win at HSBC Arena.

Daniel Paille, Andrej Sekera and Jochen Hecht also tallied for the Sabres, who have won three of their last five games. Ryan Miller turned away all 20 shots he faced before exiting two minutes into the third period with a high ankle sprain. Patrick Lalime surrendered two goals on 13 shots the rest of the way.

Markus Naslund and Nigel Dawes scored for the Rangers, who have dropped eight in a row on the road since besting Chicago in overtime on January 16. Henrik Lundqvist was tagged with four goals on 33 shots.

"We have to be better," Naslund said. "We can't afford more losses."

Paille skated down the slot and redirected a Roy pass behind Lundqvist with 4:10 remaining in the first period.

Roy then set up a goal by Sekera. The fifth-year pro accelerated into the Rangers zone and made a drop pass to the trailing defenseman, whose high shot from the top of the right circle gave Buffalo a two-goal lead with 1:20 to play in the opening frame.

Roy made it 3-0 on the power play. With the 6-foot-5 Paul Gaustad setting up shop at the top of the crease, Lundqvist managed to stop Craig Rivet's one- time blast from the point. Roy, though, was also on the doorstep and banged in the juicy rebound with 6:18 left in the middle stanza. It was the first power- play goal given up by New York in six games.

A little over a minute into the third period, Rivet was assessed a hooking infraction. During the man advantage, Miller was upended behind the net by Scott Gomez while trying to play the puck. The goaltender came down hard on his left leg and crawled back into the crease on his pads before play was halted. Miller was attended to by a Sabres trainer before he limped off the ice.

"I don't think there's any secret that (the hit) was deliberate," Sabres head coach Lindy Ruff said of Gomez's collision with Miller. "(The Rangers) wanted to try and disrupt him. We put in a cold goaltender to face a power play. It's tough."

Moments later with New York still on the power play, Gomez glided along the left-wing side and his centering feed deflected off Naslund in front to put the Rangers on the board at 2:22.

Hecht lit the lamp with 8:07 remaining and Dawes capped the scoring with 4:43 left in the game.
