Boston, MA (Sports Network) - The Boston Red Sox signed free agent pitcher Brad Penny to a one-year contract on Friday. Per club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Though the signing of Penny in no way trumps the Yankees' acquisitions of CC Sabathia and A.J. Burnett, the veteran hurler is one season removed from a 16- win campaign and adds another arm to a deep rotation.
Penny's 2008 season was soiled with three stints on the disabled list due to shoulder issues. The 30-year old compiled a 6-9 record with a career-worst 6.27 earned run average in 19 games -- 17 of which were starts.
In nine seasons with Florida and the Dodgers, Penny is 94-75 with a 4.06 ERA in 249 career games -- 245 starts -- to go along with 1,032 strikeouts.
The right-hander re-joins current Red Sox pitcher Josh Beckett and third baseman Mike Lowell, as the trio was a vital part of the 2003 Marlins squad that upended the New York Yankees in the World Series.
