Chapel Hill, NC (Sports Network) - North Carolina quarterback Cameron Sexton has decided to graduate in May 2009 and will not return for his final season of eligibility with the Tar Heels.
Sexton, an academic senior, informed the coaching staff of his decision earlier this week but will continue to explore his options for continuing his playing career next season.
"I don't know what the future holds for me," said Sexton. "I'm considering all my options, including the possibility of transferring to a Division II institution to play one more year. I have always been a competitor and I have more goals I want to accomplish on the football field. I'll always be grateful for the opportunities I had at North Carolina."
Under NCAA rules, Sexton would be unable to transfer to another Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) or Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) school for his final year of eligibility but has the option of transferring to a Division II school, where his eligibility would be immediate.
Sexton played in eight games with six starts for the Tar Heels this past season after fellow QB and starter T.J. Yates went down with a fractured left ankle against Virginia Tech, September 20.
He was 94-of-198 passing for 1,261 yards, nine TDs and six interceptions as the Tar Heels finished with a 4-4 mark in the ACC and were 8-5 overall.
For his career, Sexton completed 152-of-305 pass attempts for 2,110 yards and 13 TDs, seeing action in seven games during the 2006 season and earning five starts as a redshirt freshman.
