Washington, DC (Sports Network) - The Washington Nationals have reportedly decided to take the interim tag off manager Jim Riggleman and give him the job on a full-time basis.
The team's Web site and other media sources report the club will hold a news conference Thursday at Nationals Park to make the announcement.
Riggleman and Bobby Valentine were reportedly the final two candidates for the position. Riggleman, who turned 57 on Monday, was named interim manager of the Nationals on July 12, replacing Manny Acta. Riggleman went 33-42 after taking over for Acta, as the Nationals finished the year with a 59-103 record, the worst mark in the majors.
Riggleman owns a career mark of 555-694 over 10 years as a manager, also serving as skipper of the Padres (1992-94), Cubs (1995-99) and Mariners (2008).
His interim stint in Seattle last year also began mid-season after he took over for the fired John McLaren in June. The Mariners went 36-54 under Riggleman, who joined Washington in the offseason after Seattle hired Don Wakamatsu as their full-time manager last winter.
