Tucson, AZ (Sports Network) - The Colorado Rockies and first baseman Todd Helton have agreed to terms on a two-year contract extension that will allow him to finish his career with the franchise.
The new deal will take Helton through the 2013 season. He has also agreed to defer a portion of his contract over a 10-year period beginning in 2014.
"This is a great commitment for both the organization and me," Helton said in a statement from the team. "Potentially, it allows us to continue to put a championship caliber club on the field and allows me the opportunity to finish my career as a Colorado Rockie. Because I am a Rockie."
Helton is the franchise's all-time leader in nearly every offensive category. The five-time NL All-Star was selected by the Rockies in the first round of the 1997 draft and made his big league debut later that season.
The 36-year-old veteran is a career .328 hitter with 325 homers and 1,202 runs batted in over 1,812 games. Last season, he batted .325 with 15 homers and 86 RBI in 151 games.
"His commitment to the standard of team, his strength of character and the mutual trust and accountability between Todd and the organization made the extension right for both of us," said Rockies general manager Dan O'Dowd.
Helton is just the fifth player in big league history with 500 doubles, a .325 average and 320 homers. The others are Hall of Famers Stan Musial, Ted Williams, Lou Gehrig and Babe Ruth.
