Kissimmee, FL (Sports Network) - Houston Astros first baseman Lance Berkman will undergo arthroscopic surgery on his left knee within the next few days and will miss two to four weeks of action.
Berkman said he felt discomfort in the knee after running the bases on Sunday. The veteran slugger suffered a knee contusion earlier in the month and had his knee drained twice since, but it has remained problematic.
The surgery will clean out debris in the knee and make Berkman questionable for the Opening Day lineup.
Berkman is entering his 12th big league season, all with Houston. He batted a full-season career-low .274 in 2009 with 25 homers and 80 runs batted in.
The 34-year-old has had knee surgery twice before, once a minor procedure in 1999 on the left knee and another in 2004 to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee.
