New York, NY (Sports Network) - Houston Astros outfielder Hunter Pence was named the National League Player of the Week for the period ending September 5.
Pence hit safely in all six games played during the week and had multiple hits in five of them. His nine runs batted in tied for the NL lead over the period and .500 batting average ranked third. Pence also posted a .909 slugging percentage, which was good for second in the NL.
The 27-year-old, who earned his second-career weekly honor, helped the Astros to a 5-2 victory over St. Louis on September 1 that completed a three-game sweep. In that one, Pence finished with two hits, including a homer, three RBI, a pair of walks and stolen base.
Other nominees this past week included Colorado's Carlos Gonzalez, Pittsburgh's Neal Walker, Florida's Hanley Ramirez, Washington's Adam Dunn, Atlanta's Jair Jurrjens, Pence's Astros teammate J.A. Happ, the Cubs' Carlos Zambrano and San Francisco's Brian Wilson.
