Mike Cameron announces retirement

Sun 19th, February 2012

Viera, FL (Sports Network) - Two months after signing a minor league deal with the Washington Nationals, outfielder Mike Cameron announced his retirement on Sunday.

Cameron is perhaps best remembered for being traded from the Reds to the Mariners as part of the deal that sent Ken Griffey Jr. to Cincinnati after the 1999 season.

The three-time Gold-Glove winner had his best statistical season in 2001 -- his lone All Star Game appearance -- when he hit .267 to go with 25 home runs and 110 runs batted in.

This past season, Cameron split time between the Boston Red Sox and the Florida Marlins, hitting .203 with nine home runs and 27 RBI.

In 17 major league seasons with eight different major league teams, including the White Sox, Mets, Padres and Brewers, Cameron is a career .249 hitter with 278 home runs and 968 RBI.
