Jason Kendall retires

Tue 24th, July 2012

Kansas City, MO (Sports Network) - The Kansas City Royals announced the retirement of three-time All-Star catcher Jason Kendall on Tuesday.

Kendall played in just two games for the club's Double-A affiliate after signing a minor league contract last Thursday.

Kendall played the 2010 season with the Royals before undergoing surgery that cost him the final month of that campaign and all of 2011.

The 38-year-old backstop batted .256 in 118 games during the 2010 season after signing a two-year contract the previous December.

Kendall is a career .288 hitter in 2,085 games with Pittsburgh (1996-2004), Oakland (2005-07), the Chicago Cubs (2007), Milwaukee (2008-09) and Kansas City (2010). He is fifth all-time in baseball history with 2,025 games caught and was an NL All-Star in 1996, 1998 and 2000 during his tenure with the Pirates.
