(Sports Network) - Chris Young will attempt to duplicate Saturday's magnificent performance from teammate Jake Peavy when the San Diego Padres hurler takes the mound in this afternoon's finale of a three-game series with the visiting Los Angeles Dodgers.
Peavy, the reigning National League Cy Young Award winner, was in his 2007 form in yesterday's showdown with the Dodgers. The All-Star right-hander yielded just two hits and one walk while striking out eight in a complete-game effort that fueled the Padres to a 4-1 victory.
All four San Diego runs came in the first inning, when the club strung together five consecutive singles off Los Angeles ace Brad Penny and had six hits overall during the frame. Kevin Kouzmanoff, Khalil Greene and Josh Bard all delivered RBI base hits in the outburst, while Scott Hairston drove in the other Padre run with a sacrifice fly.
Penny (1-1) settled down after that rough start and did not allow a run over the remainder of his six-inning stint.
Peavy (2-0), meanwhile, set down the first nine Dodger hitters he faced until Rafael Furcal tripled to lead off the fourth inning. Furcal would score LA's lone run on a Russell Martin pop out and James Loney followed with a double for the team's only other hit.
Only two Dodgers would reach base the rest of the way as Peavy improved to 10-1 lifetime against Los Angeles and enabled the Padres to avenge a 4-1 loss in Friday's series opener.
Young is coming off a strong 2007 campaign as well as a good first start of this season. The towering right-hander defeated Houston on Tuesday after giving up just one run and five hits over 5 2/3 innings, but struggled with his command at times and issued five walks before exiting.
The Princeton alum finished 9-8 with a 3.12 earned run average last season and held opposing hitters to a major-league low .192 average at the plate. Young was especially dominant at Petco Park last year, where he recorded a microscopic 1.69 ERA in 13 starts.
Young faced Los Angeles three times in 2007 and went 1-1 with a 3.60 ERA in those games. The 28-year-old is 1-2 in eight career starts against the Dodgers despite a 2.98 ERA in 45 1/3 total innings.
Derek Lowe, coming off a solid first outing of the year for Los Angeles, will oppose Young this afternoon. The veteran right-hander held San Francisco to two runs while scattering nine hits over six innings on Tuesday, but did not factor in the decision of his team's 3-2 victory.
Lowe has never won (0-3) in six lifetime starts at Petco Park, although he has pitched to a respectable 3.41 ERA in the stadium. The sinker specialist had a 5.30 ERA in three matchups with the Padres last season, going 1-1 with a no decision in those tilts.
For his career Lowe is 3-3 with a 3.09 ERA in 12 starts versus San Diego.
San Diego finished with a 10-8 edge on the Dodgers in last year's season series and won six of the nine matchups played at Petco Park. Los Angeles is just 7-13 in San Diego since the start of the 2006 season.
