(Sports Network) - Winners of five consecutive games, the Arizona Diamondbacks aim to continue their recent roll and shoot for a three-game sweep of the Los Angeles Dodgers this afternoon at Chase Field.
The Diamondbacks have outscored their opponents by an impressive 39-13 margin during their win streak and easily handled Los Angeles for the second straight night with Tuesday's 10-5 victory. Conor Jackson and Mark Reynolds both knocked in three runs to back an inspiring performance on the mound from Arizona starter Doug Davis.
Davis (1-1) held the Dodgers to two runs and struck out seven over six innings in his final start before having to undergo surgery for thyroid cancer. The crafty left-hander was diagnosed with the disease late in spring training and is expected to miss from 4-to-6 weeks following the procedure.
Reynolds gave Davis a quick lead with a three-run homer off Chad Billingsley in the first inning. It was the third baseman's major league-leading fifth round-tripper of the season, and he also leads the bigs with 12 RBI at the moment.
Davis also helped his own cause by singling twice and driving in a run in two official plate appearances.
Billingsley (0-1) was rocked for five runs (four earned) in just 2 1/3 innings of work. The young righty walked three batters and surrendered five hits before exiting.
Jeff Kent and Blake DeWitt each finished with two hits and two RBI for the slumping Dodgers, who have dropped three of four following a 3-1 start to the year. Matt Kemp went 3-for-5 with a run scored in a losing cause.
Today's finale features a pair of pitchers who put forth outstanding 2008 debuts in the Dodgers' Hiroki Kuroda and Arizona's Micah Owings.
Kuroda's start against San Diego last Friday was actually the Japanese veteran's first in the major leagues, and the 33-year-old shined in his initial outing. He limited the Padres to a run on three hits over seven innings to earn the victory in Los Angeles' 7-1 decision. San Diego's lone run came on a solo homer from Brian Giles in the fourth inning.
The right-hander spent the past 11 seasons with the Hiroshima Carp of the Japanese Central League before signing a three-year contract with the Dodgers in December.
Owings was just as impressive in his start against Colorado on Friday. The second-year hurler yielded just one run and two hits while striking out a career-best nine Rockies in 6 2/3 innings to lead the D-Backs to an 8-1 triumph. The right-hander retired 17 consecutive batters after giving up a leadoff double to Colorado's Willy Taveras in the first inning.
The 25-year-old faced Los Angeles three times, two of which were starts, as a rookie last year and went 0-1 with a 3.27 earned run average in those games.
The Dodgers won 10 of 18 versus their division rivals last year and posted a 6-3 mark in Arizona, but the Diamondbacks have now won five of six and eight of their last 11 against LA.
