Game Two: Baltimore - Adam Loewen (0-0, 7.71) Texas - Kason Gabbard (1-0, 0.00)
(Sports Network) - The Baltimore Orioles try to continue their terrific start to the season today, when they play a twi-night doubleheader to wrap up their three-game series with the host Texas Rangers.
The second game of this set was supposed to be played on Wednesday, but rain in Arlington caused the postponement, making today's double-dip necessary.
In the opener of this set on Tuesday, Aubrey Huff finished 4-for-4 with four RBI and Brian Burres was stellar on the mound, as Baltimore rolled to an 8-1 win. Luke Scott and Scott Moore each belted their first home runs of the season for the Orioles, who have won six straight after dropping their season- opener and are off to their best start since opening the 1998 campaign 7-1.
Baltimore has not won seven in a row since an eight-game tear from April 22- May 1, 2005.
Burres (1-0), celebrating his 27th birthday on Tuesday, allowed one run on seven hits and struck out three over six-plus innings. Matt Albers fanned four in his two innings of relief, while Greg Aquino tossed a perfect ninth.
Baltimore's bullpen has been a big part of its success early on. After posting the second-worst earned run average in the majors last season at 5.71, the O's relief corps has pitched to an 0.74 ERA early on, surrendering just two runs in 24 1/3 innings while allowing 11 hits and five walks.
Jason Jennings (0-2) struggled on the mound for Texas, allowing four runs on seven hits and four walks over 4 2/3 innings. Ben Broussard and Milton Bradley each had two hits for the Rangers, who have lost four of seven to begin the season.
Veteran Steve Trachsel goes for the Orioles in the first game, looking for his second straight victory. The 37-year-old right-hander defeated Seattle, 7-4, on April 4, allowing two runs on four hits over 5 2/3 innings.
A 15-game winner with the New York Mets in 2006, Trachsel split last season between Baltimore and the Chicago Cubs, going 7-11 in 29 starts. He's made four lifetime starts against the Rangers, going 1-1 with a 7.06 ERA in 21 2/3 innings.
Trachsel will be opposed by right-handed veteran Kevin Millwood, who is still searching for his first win despite two strong outings to start the season. Millwood has been victimized by poor run support thus far, as he has surrendered just two earned runs in 14 innings with the Rangers crossing the plate only three times in his starts.
Millwood's latest hard-luck defeat came on Saturday against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, who managed two runs and 12 hits off of him in eight innings of a 2-1 Texas loss.
Millwood has faced the O's 10 times in his career and is 7-2 with a 3.49 ERA against them
Former Boston Red Sox prospect Kason Gabbard takes the hill for the Rangers in the nightcap. A 25-year-old southpaw, Gabbard made his season debut on April 4 in Anaheim, allowing seven hits in seven scoreless innings of the Rangers' 11-6 defeat of the Angels.
He appeared in seven games last season with the Red Sox, going 4-0 with a 3.73 earned run average in 41 innings before coming to Texas as part of the deal that sent relief pitcher Eric Gagne to the eventual World Series champions.
Gabbard is 8-4 in 23 career big-league appearances, including 20 starts, and allowed 99 hits and 52 earned runs in 114 innings. He's made two starts against the Orioles, going 1-0 with a 2.53 ERA over 10 2/3 innings.
Opposing Gabbard in the second game will be 24-year-old left-hander Adam Loewen, who had a shaky season debut against the Seattle Mariners on Saturday. Loewen gave up four runs and four hits and walked three in 4 2/3 frames in that one, but did not factor in the decision of his team's 6-4 win.
Loewen has never faced the Rangers.
Texas won six of its 10 matchups with the Orioles last season and is 18-12 in the series since the start of the 2005 campaign, including an 11-8 mark in Arlington in that time.
