(Sports Network) - John Maine hopes to bounce back from a horrific season debut when the New York Mets play the rubber match of their three-game series with the Philadelphia Phillies this evening at Shea Stadium.
After an impressive spring that saw Maine pitch to a 1.53 earned run average in seven Grapefruit League starts, the 26-year-old right-hander was roughed up by the Atlanta Braves on Saturday, as he surrendered four runs and eight hits in four innings to suffer the loss.
Maine, though, has been incredible against the Phillies since joining the Mets, posting a perfect 4-0 mark to go along with a 2.13 ERA in six starts.
New York snapped a nine-game losing streak to its division rivals on Wednesday, as Mike Pelfrey pitched five solid innings and the Mets were aided by a flurry of errors and walks by the Phillies in an 8-2 win.
Pelfrey (1-0) gave up two runs on five hits with three strikeouts and two walks for the Mets, who beat the Phillies for the first time since June 30 of last season. Angel Pagan's two-run double in the third inning was the big blow for New York, which scored eight runs despite having only five hits thanks to nine walks and four errors by the Phillies.
Kyle Kendrick (1-1) suffered from the poor defense, giving up seven runs -- only one of which was earned -- on four hits in 2 1/3 innings. Kendrick didn't help himself with his control, however, as he issued almost as many walks -- six -- as outs he recorded before being pulled in the third.
Pat Burrell went 2-for-4 and scored for Philadelphia, which had a two-game winning streak stopped.
The Phillies played without star shortstop Jimmy Rollins, who sprained his left ankle in Philadelphia's 5-2 win on Tuesday. Eric Bruntlett struggled in his place, committing two crucial errors during New York's six-run third inning.
Rollins, who is hitting .364 (16-for-44) with three homers, 11 RBI and six stolen bases in his last nine games at Shea, is questionable for tonight's contest.
Getting the call for the Phillies tonight will be right-hander Adam Eaton, who was impressive in his season debut on Saturday after a horrendous spring. Eaton gave up three runs and six hits in 7 2/3 innings to the Cincinnati Reds on Saturday, but did not factor in the decision of his team's 4-3 loss.
Eaton has also been impressive against the Mets over the course of his career, having gone 5-0 with a 2.68 ERA in seven starts against them.
Despite losing 12 of 18 games to the Phillies a year ago, the Mets still hold a slight 29-28 edge in the overall series since the start of the 2005 campaign. The Mets, though, haven't won back-to-back games against the Phils in Flushing since August 26-28, 2006.
