(Sports Network) - Brett Myers continues what has so far been a less than stellar return to the starting rotation for Philadelphia tonight, when the Phillies begin a three-game series with the Chicago Cubs at Citizens Bank Park.
After serving most of last season as the Phillies' closer, Myers is 0-1 with a 6.30 earned run average through two starts this year -- both Philadelphia losses. He has also failed to go beyond five innings in each of those starts.
In the Phillies' first game of the season, Myers, 27, allowed four runs (3 earned) in a no-decision to Washington on March 31 -- an eventual 11-6 loss by Philly -- and then allowed four runs on eight hits during an 8-2 setback to Cincinnati on Sunday.
The right-hander faced the Cubs four times out of the bullpen last year, going 0-1 with a save and 2.08 ERA. In 11 lifetime outings versus Chicago, seven of those starts, Myers is 5-3 with two complete games and a 2.53 ERA.
Myers will aim to help the Phillies rebound from a 3-4 road trip that saw them drop the final two games of their three-game series with the New York Mets. On Thursday, Angel Pagan's two-out single scored Jose Reyes with the winning run in the bottom of the 12th, as the Mets edged the Phillies, 4-3.
Working in his second inning of relief, Tom Gordon (0-2) gave up the winning run on a close play at home. Philadelphia's bullpen had allowed just two hits in four innings of work before the final two innings.
Pedro Feliz and Ryan Howard homered for Philadelphia, which was without reigning NL MVP Jimmy Rollins for a second straight game. Rollins suffered a sprained left ankle in the series-opening win on Tuesday and was able to pinch-hit last night, striking out. He is day-to-day with the ailment.
Philadelphia begins a nine-game homestand tonight that will also see visits by Houston and the Mets.
Chicago counters Myers with its ace, Carlos Zambrano, who will start tonight after earning his first victory of the season last time out. He is being moved up a day in the rotation because Jason Marquis is battling the flu.
Despite 6 2/3 shutout innings on March 31, Zambrano earned a no-decision against Milwaukee, but came back with seven innings of two-run ball versus Houston on Sunday in a 3-2 victory. He also struck out seven batters while allowing seven hits.
The 26-year-old right-hander is 3-2 with a 2.79 ERA in six lifetime starts versus the Phillies, and has given up just one homer against them in 42 innings. He did not face them last year.
Playing their first road series of the season, the Cubs left Pittsburgh with a three-game sweep after Thursday's 7-3 victory. Mike Fontenot and Geovany Soto both hit two-run homers for Chicago, which won its fifth straight.
Jon Lieber (2-1) provided 4 1/3 innings of scoreless long relief by scattering five hits with one strikeout after starter Rich Hill struggled with his command.
Derrek Lee drove in a pair of runs and Alfonso Soriano finished 2-for-5 with two runs scored. Chicago broke out the brooms in a crazy, marathon series that lasted 36 total frames. The Cubs won in 15 innings on Wednesday after a 12- frame victory on Monday night.
Philadelphia won four of seven last year versus Chicago and is 13-7 versus the club since the start of the 2005 season. That includes a 6-3 mark at home.
