(Sports Network) - Right-hander Bronson Arroyo makes his sixth career start against the team that drafted him tonight, when the Cincinnati Reds visit PNC Park for the second test of a three-game series with the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Arroyo, a 31-year-old native of Key West, Florida, was selected in the third round of the 1995 draft by the Pirates and initially reached the majors with them in 2000. He spent parts of three seasons with Pittsburgh, going 9-14 over 53 appearances.
He began 2003 with the Boston Red Sox and remained with them through 2005 until coming to Cincinnati in a trade for outfielder Wily Mo Pena.
Arroyo was 14-11 in his first season with the Reds before slumping to 9-15 last year. He's 1-3 lifetime against the Pirates with a 4.65 earned run average in 31 innings.
In two overall starts this season, Arroyo has a loss and a no decision, allowing 13 hits and seven earned runs in 10 2/3 innings.
Righty Ian Snell goes for Pittsburgh tonight for the third time in 2008.
The 26-year-old, a former 26th-round draft pick, has beaten Florida and picked up a no decision against Atlanta in two outings, allowing 11 hits and five earned runs in 12 total innings.
In seven lifetime starts against the Reds, Snell is 2-4 with a 5.31 ERA in 42 1/3 innings.
On Friday, Jason Bay's second home run of the season, a sixth-inning solo shot, was all the offense needed as Pittsburgh edged Cincinnati, 1-0, in the opener of this series.
John Grabow (1-0) earned the win in relief after allowing one hit in 1 1/3 innings for the Pirates, who snapped a three-game slide. Matt Capps pitched a scoreless ninth for his second save.
Bucs tarter Paul Maholm threw 5 1/3 innings of six-hit, shutout ball in a no decision
Brandon Phillips collected two hits for the Reds, whose two-game win streak ended and who were shut out for the first time this season.
Jared Burton (0-1) took the loss, while starter Edinson Volquez allowed just three hits over five frames.
Following a one-hour, 22-minute rain delay, the Pirates broke through against Burton as Bay slammed a two-out solo homer in the sixth.
Cincinnati won the season series with the Pirates, 9-7, a year ago.
