(Sports Network) - The New York Mets will hope for another dazzling outing from Johan Santana today, when they continue their three-game series with the Milwaukee Brewers at Shea Stadium.
Santana has been worth every penny of the six-year, $137.5 million deal he signed with New York over the winter. Through two starts, he has given up just three runs in 14 innings while striking out 11 and walking just two batters.
The 29-year-old left-hander earned a win in his Mets debut on March 31 after giving up two runs in seven innings against the Marlins. He then toed the rubber on Sunday and allowed just a run on seven hits against the Braves, but was on the losing end of a 3-1 decision.
Santana has actually faced the Brewers nine times in his career, five of those starts, and is 3-1 with a 3.32 earned run average and 58 strikeouts over 40 2/3 innings against them. He last faced Milwaukee in June of 2005 and hasn't beaten the club since 2004.
Milwaukee will counter with a very capable arm of its own in Ben Sheets, who is currently riding a 15 1/3 scoreless-innings streak to start the season. The right-hander held Chicago to just two hits in 6 1/3 frames on March 31 before tossing a shutout over San Francisco on Sunday. Sheets gave up only five hits against the Giants and struck out eight to lift his season total to 15.
Sheets' shutout was the second of his career and first since May 29, 2001. The 29-year-old's scoreless-inning streak is the sixth-longest to begin a season in club history and third best by a starter. Jim Slaton is fifth on the list after tossing 16 innings without a run to start the 1977 season, and set the club record the previous year with 20 scoreless frames.
The righty is 3-2 with a 5.45 ERA in six career starts against the Mets, going 3-1 at Shea Stadium. Sheets posted a victory in his lone start versus the Mets last year, yielding just three runs in a 12-3 road win.
The Mets got a surprise gem in this series opener on Friday, as Nelson Figueroa tossed six solid innings in a 4-2 victory at Shea for his first win in more than four years.
Figueroa (1-0), thrust into the rotation due to injuries to Pedro Martinez (hamstring) and Orlando Hernandez (foot), gave up two runs on two hits while striking out six and walking two for the Mets, who have won three in a row. The New York City native last won a game on August 15, 2003, also against the Brewers.
David Wright and Angel Pagan each collected two hits for New York, with Pagan, Carlos Delgado, Damion Easley and Raul Casanova collecting an RBI each.
However, Mets shortstop Jose Reyes left after five innings due to tightness in his left hamstring and will not play today. Easley could replace him at short if Luis Castillo is able to return to the lineup. Castillo had been out since leaving Tuesday's game against Philadelphia with a sore right knee, and Easley had been filling in at second.
Prince Fielder and J.J. Hardy had Milwaukee's two hits and both runs batted in, as the Brewers lost their third straight game. Manny Parra (1-1) lasted just four innings for the Brewers, giving up three runs on six hits while walking one and striking out four.
The Mets won four of six versus the Brewers last year after the clubs split six meetings in each of the previous two years. New York has won five of its last seven as the host against Milwaukee.
