(Sports Network) - The Arizona Diamondbacks aim to regain their strong early season form when the defending National League West champions continue a three-game set against the San Francisco Giants with an afternoon tilt today from AT&T Park.
Arizona surged to the top of the division standings by virtue of an eight-game win streak from April 4-12, but the club has lost two in a row since that tear. In Monday's series opener with the Giants, the Diamondbacks were hurt by a pair of costly errors that contributed to a 5-4 defeat.
All five San Francisco runs were unearned due to miscues by Arizona third baseman Mark Reynolds and shortstop Stephen Drew. Drew's error led to a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh inning that put the Giants ahead by a 5-4 count.
Randy Winn had a two-run single in the third inning and scored twice for San Francisco, which won for the fifth time in its last seven outings. Keiichi Yabu (1-1) earned the victory with two scoreless frames in relief of Jonathan Sanchez, who gave up four runs -- three earned -- through the first five innings.
Randy Johnson made his first major league start since June 28 on Monday and yielded three unearned runs while striking out seven in five innings of work. The Arizona lefty was denied a win, however, when San Francisco scored twice off reliever Chad Qualls in the seventh.
Conor Jackson paced the Diamondbacks offensively by going 2-for-4 with three RBI, including a two-run homer.
Arizona has lost back-to-back games for only the second time this season. On the first occasion, Micah Owings halted the slide with a stellar outing at Colorado on April 4. The young right-hander will attempt to duplicate that showing when he takes the mound this afternoon.
Owings held the Rockies to a run and two hits while striking out nine over six innings, then followed up with another winning start against the Dodgers on Wednesday. He pitched seven innings in that one and allowed three runs on seven hits in Arizona's 4-3 triumph.
The 25-year-old, who has won four straight regular-season starts dating back to last season, went 1-1 with a 4.85 earned run average in two assignments versus San Francisco during his 2007 rookie campaign. He was hit hard in his lone appearance at AT&T Park, however, surrendering seven runs over four innings to take the loss back on July 1.
Kevin Correia, who gets the call for the Giants this afternoon, is also coming off an excellent last start. The right-hander twirled 7 2/3 shutout innings in which he gave up just five hits and two walks to defeat St. Louis in his home season debut last Thursday.
Correia improved off a shaky outing at Milwaukee on April 5, when he permitted four runs and walked three over six frames in a 5-4 Giants' loss.
The versatile swingman, who pitched mostly in relief last season, has a 2.95 ERA in 10 career appearances (2 starts) against Arizona but has an 0-1 record over that span. Correia had a pair of no decisions versus the Diamondbacks last September in which he allowed three runs over a combined 11 innings.
Arizona won 10 of its 18 matchups with the Giants last year, but San Francisco is 7-3 in its last 10 contests against the D-Backs at AT&T Park.
