(Sports Network) - Dana Eveland tries for his third impressive outing to start the season this afternoon, when the Oakland Athletics try to complete a two- game sweep in their brief series with the Chicago White Sox at U.S. Cellular Field.
After beating the Cleveland Indians by giving up a run and six hits over seven innings in his season debut back on April 5, Eveland was even better in his most recent outing on Thursday despite walking away with a no decision in his team's 3-2 extra-inning triumph at Toronto.
Eveland, who has never faced the White Sox, scattered three hits over 6 1/3 scoreless innings in that one, while striking out six and walking three.
Chicago will counter with left-hander John Danks, who is celebrating his 23rd birthday today. Danks was solid in his first start of the year but was drilled by the Minnesota Twins his last time out on Wednesday.
He was touched up for seven runs and seven hits in just 2 1/3 frames in the loss, as he fell to 0-1 on the year and had his ERA raised to 8.00.
Danks won his only other start against the A's, allowing just an earned run in six innings last May. He is actually the last Chicago pitcher to beat the A's, who have won five in a row from the White Sox.
In the opener of this abbreviated series on Monday, Greg Smith picked up the first win of his career as Oakland eked out a 2-1 victory. Smith (1-0) was strong on the night, as he gave up just one run on six hits with one walk and four strikeouts in seven innings of work.
Kurt Suzuki went 4-for-4 with an RBI and Mike Sweeney went 2-for-4 with two runs scored for the Athletics, who have won six of their last seven games overall.
Nick Swisher had two hits and a run scored while Jim Thome drove in the lone run for the White Sox, who lost for the first time in their last three tries.
Chicago starter Mark Buehrle (1-1) got the loss for giving up two runs on nine hits in seven innings of work.
Oakland, which swept a three-game set from Chicago last August, won five of its nine matchups with the White Sox a year ago and is 16-9 in the series since the start of the 2005 season. The A's, though, have lost five of their last seven on the Southside.
As part of Jackie Robinson Day, commemorating the 61st anniversary of the Hall of Fame second baseman breaking the color barrier and entering the league, the entire Oakland team will wear his No. 42 that was retired by commissioner Bud Selig throughout Major League Baseball on April 15, 1997. Jermaine Dye, Swisher and Jim Thome, along with manager Ozzie Guillen and coaches Harold Baines and Jeff Cox, will do the same for the White Sox.
