(Sports Network) - The Chicago White Sox try for their fifth straight road win this evening when they begin a brief two-game series with the Baltimore Orioles at Camden Yards.
Chicago, which will be starting a five-game road swing tonight, lost its first two games away from home on the season, but have won four straight since and surprisingly sit atop the AL Central standings at 8-5.
The White Sox continued their strong start to the season on Tuesday, as Carlos Quentin smashed a three-run home run and John Danks threw 7 2/3 shutout innings, guiding Chicago past the Oakland Athletics, 4-1, at U.S. Cellular Field.
Joe Crede drove in a run and scored a run for the White Sox, who were without Jim Thome, who served a one-game suspension for inappropriate actions after arguing balls and strikes during game against the Detroit Tigers last week.
Danks (1-1) allowed just five hits and walked two while striking out four. His performance followed up an impressive stretch by Chicago's starters that has seen them allow just two runs over the last 29 innings.
Chicago hopes right-hander Jose Contreras can continue that trend tonight. The Cuban right-hander, though, is off to an 0-1 start, while pitching to a 6.17 earned run average over his first two starts.
Contreras, who lost 17 games a year ago, was tagged with the loss on Friday against the Detroit Tigers, as he surrendered four runs and six hits in 6 2/3 innings.
In 10 games (nine starts) in his career against the O's, Contreras is 3-4 with a 5.50 ERA. Last season he lost both of his starts to them and gave up 11 runs in 11 innings in doing so.
Baltimore will counter with young left-hander Adam Loewen, who will be facing the White Sox for the first time tonight. Loewen has not received a decision in either of his two starts this season, but has pitched to a lofty 7.45 ERA in those outings.
Against the Texas Rangers last Thursday the 24-year-old Loewen gave up four runs and six hits over five innings, but did not factor in the decision of his team's 5-4 loss.
Baltimore has alternated wins and losses over its last five games, but comes into tonight's tilt on the heels of an 11-3 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays on Tuesday. Nick Markakis, Adam Jones and Melvin Mora each hit solo home runs for the O's, who have lost five of their last seven games.
Steve Trachsel (1-2) got the loss by surrendering five runs on five hits in 2 1/3 innings of work. Trachsel had been unbeaten in seven career starts against the Blue Jays prior to Tuesday's drubbing.
Baltimore won the season series a year ago, 5-3, including wins in three of the four matchups at Camden Yards.
