(Sports Network) - Southpaw Ted Lilly looks to get on the winning side of the ledger against a skidding foe today, when the Chicago Cubs host the Cincinnati Reds in the finale of a three-game series at Wrigley Field.
Lilly, who turned 32 in January, is 1-1 lifetime in five starts against the Reds, who have lost five straight games, including the first two of this series. Lilly has allowed 16 hits and 10 runs in 27 innings, striking out 33 batters.
However, he's been hit hard in three starts thus far in 2008 after losing decisions to Milwaukee and Philadelphia before leaving a game against Pittsburgh after just 3 2/3 innings. He yielded seven hits and five runs.
Overall, Lilly has yielded 19 hits and 14 runs in 12 2/3 innings.
Dominican right-hander Edinson Volquez can go from young phenom to slump- stopper for the slumping Reds.
The 24-year-old, acquired from Texas in the offseason for outfielder Josh Hamilton, has defeated Philadelphia and taken a hard-luck no-decision against Pittsburgh while surrendering just eight hits and one run in 10 1/3 innings.
Volquez, who made 20 big-league appearances with the Rangers from 2005-07, has never faced the Cubs.
On Wednesday, Derrek Lee had three hits and scored a pair of runs as the Cubs pummeled the Reds, 12-3.
Lee homered for the second straight game, while Kosuke Fukudome, Mark DeRosa and Geovany Soto each had a two-run double for the Cubs, who have taken the first two games of the series by a combined score of 21-8. Soto finished with three RBI.
Carlos Zambrano (2-1) picked up the win, allowing two runs on eight hits over seven innings for Chicago. The hard-throwing right-hander walked just one batter and fanned five.
Prior to the game, the Cubs placed outfielder Alfonso Soriano on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right calf, and recalled infielder Eric Patterson from Triple-A Iowa of the Pacific Coast League.
Adam Dunn went 2-for-3 with a solo homer and a double for the Reds, who have dropped five straight.
Josh Fogg (1-2) had a disastrous outing, as he was charged with seven hits and nine earned runs in two-plus innings of work.
These teams split 18 meetings in 2007, with Cincinnati winning five of the nine matchups held at Wrigley Field.
