New York Yankees (9-8) at Baltimore Orioles (9-7), 7:05 p.m.

(Sports Network) - The New York Yankees haven't trailed the Baltimore Orioles in the American League East standings too many times in recent years. But that's the position the Bronx Bombers currently find themselves in when they head to Camden Yards tonight for the first of three straight meetings between these teams.

Baltimore is off to a surprising 9-7 start to the season, which places the club one-half game in front of New York in the AL East race and a half-game behind the front-running Boston Red Sox. The Orioles had lost two straight contests, however, before rallying to earn a 10-inning victory over the visiting Chicago White Sox last night.

Adam Jones ripped a line-drive single to plate Kevin Millar with the game- winning run that gave Baltimore a 6-5 win. Millar and Luke Scott each drew walks against Chicago's Boone Logan before Jones took a 1-0 pitch up the middle to complete the O's rally.

Baltimore sent the game into extras by scoring twice off Sox closer Bobby Jenks in the ninth. Brian Roberts came through with an RBI double to pull the Orioles within 5-4 and Melvin Mora later came home on Melvin Mora's single.

The win went to George Sherrill (1-0), who set Chicago down in the top of the 10th. Baltimore's bullpen pieced together four solid innings in relief of Jeremy Guthrie, who allowed four runs -- three earned -- on six hits over six frames.

Nick Markakis clubbed a two-run homer for the Orioles, while Scott delivered an RBI double on the evening.

The Yankees come in having won three of their last four games despite falling to rival Boston on Thursday. Manny Ramirez homered in consecutive innings and Josh Beckett held New York in check over eight solid frames as the Red Sox earned a 7-5 victory and a split of a two-game series at Yankee Stadium.

Boston roared out to a 7-0 lead and pounded Yankees starter Mike Mussina (1-3) for five runs on seven hits over his three-inning stint.

Derek Jeter had a two-run single and Melky Cabrera smacked a solo home run off Jonathan Papelbon in the ninth to pace New York offensively. Cabrera finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored in the loss.

Phil Hughes gets the starting assignment for New York in tonight's opener and will be seeking a rebound from one of the worst starts of his brief big league career.

Against the rival Boston Red Sox on Sunday, Hughes surrendered seven runs (6 earned) and six hits before being lifted with nobody out in the third inning. The highly-regarded youngster also issued three walks and labored through 65 pitches in New York's 8-5 setback at Fenway Park.

Hughes was only marginally better in his previous outing, when the former first-round pick lasted just three innings and yielded three runs on six hits and four walks in a loss at Kansas City.

The 22-year-old battled the Orioles twice during his 2007 rookie campaign and went 1-0 with a 3.38 earned run average in those games. Both starts took place at Yankee Stadium, however.

Baltimore will send out a right-hander notorious for having control issues of his own in Daniel Cabrera, who has led the AL in walks in each of the past two seasons. The native Dominican did a solid job of throwing strikes his last time out, however, and was rewarded with a victory in the Orioles' 3-2 triumph at Tampa Bay last Saturday.

Cabrera did walk three that night but limited the Rays to one run and five hits over 6 2/3 innings, his longest stint of the season. He also did not allow a home run after serving up four long balls over his first two 2008 starts.

The hard-throwing 26-year-old is 2-3 with a 5.35 ERA in seven career starts against the Yankees. Cabrera faced New York five times in 2007 and posted a 1-3 record and a poor 6.67 ERA over that stretch of games.

These divisional foes split 18 meetings in 2007, with the Orioles taking five of the nine matchups held in Camden Yards. The Yankees have won 13 of their last 21 games in Baltimore, however.
