(Sports Network) - The Arizona Diamondbacks have the best winning percentage so far in the majors, and will try for more success tonight in the opener of a three-game series versus the NL West-rival San Diego Padres at Chase Field.
Arizona is 11-4 so far this season, while the St. Louis Cardinals are 11-5 in 2008. The D'Backs, who will also host San Francisco on their current homestand, just took two of three from the Giants and recorded a 4-1 win in the finale on Wednesday.
Ace Brandon Webb put forth a solid all-around effort with eight innings of three-hit ball, while allowing just one run. He also knocked in a pair of runs at the plate. Brandon Lyon earned his third save with a scoreless ninth, as Arizona won for the 10th time in the last 12 games.
Eric Byrnes and Orlando Hudson drove in a run apiece for Arizona, which improved to 10-2 against the NL West this season.
D'Backs starter Dan Haren will try to stay perfect this season when he takes the hill on Friday against San Diego. Haren is 2-0 with a 2.50 ERA in three starts this season. He did not factor in the decision in his Arizona debut on April 2 at Cincinnati, but has rebounded for consecutive victories over the Dodgers and Rockies.
In his last outing on April 12 against Colorado, Haren posted the victory after giving up just one run and five hits through six innings. He was 0-2 after his first three starts with Oakland in 2007. Haren is 0-0 with a 1.69 ERA in three career games (two starts) against the Padres.
San Diego has dropped two straight and will open a five-game road trip tonight at the Diamondbacks. The Padres suffered a 2-1 loss in 22 innings on Thursday, as Josh Bard drove in the lone run for the Padres and ace Jake Peavy hurled eight scoreless innings. The Padres used seven pitchers with relief hurler Glendon Rusch absorbing the loss after giving up the winning run in three innings of work.
Colorado's Troy Tulowitzki knocked in the go-ahead run in the 22nd inning in the longest game since August 31, 1993, when Minnesota topped Cleveland by a 5-4 score in 22 innings.
San Diego will rest its hopes on Greg Maddux tonight. Maddux was scheduled to pitch Saturday, but Chris Young was pushed back because of elbow problems. Maddux is 2-0 in three starts this season, and is in search of win No. 350 for his great career. He can become only the ninth pitcher in major league history to win 350 career games and is just five wins behind Roger Clemens for eighth- place on the all-time list.
The right-hander will have a tough time achieving that feat since he is just 2-10 with a 4.88 ERA in 18 career starts against the Diamondbacks. Maddux last pitched on April 13 at the Dodgers, and earned the win with five shutout innings of two-run ball.
Arizona won 10 of its 18 matchups with San Diego last year, winning six of nine at home.
