(Sports Network) - The New York Mets will go for their fourth straight win over the Philadelphia Phillies this afternoon, as the two clubs resume a three-game set at Citizens Bank Park.
New York went 6-12 against Philadelphia last year and lost the final eight meetings between the teams en route to losing the National League East title to the Phillies on the final day of the season.
The Mets then dropped their first test of the season to the Phils on April 8 to make it nine setbacks in a row to them, but rebounded to win the final two games of that series in Shea.
New York then paid its NL East rivals a visit on Friday and posted a 6-4 victory. David Wright went 4-for-4, driving in a pair of runs and coming a home run shy of the cycle, and Johan Santana struck out 10 over seven-plus innings for the Mets.
Santana (2-2) was charged with three runs on four hits without a walk. Wright had two doubles, Brian Schneider was 3-for-4, and Ryan Church and Angel Pagan had two hits apiece, with Church scoring three times. Former Phillie Billy Wagner tossed a scoreless ninth, earning his third save and helping the Mets win the opener of a seven-game road trip.
New York won its fourth straight and has won seven of nine overall.
In an anticipated pitching matchup, Cole Hamels (2-2) wasn't equal to Santana, allowing five runs -- four earned -- on eight hits and three walks while striking out four in seven-plus frames. Chase Utley hit a solo home run, while Greg Dobbs added a late three-run homer for the Phillies, who totaled five hits while falling to 4-3 on a nine-game homestand.
Philadelphia's current losing streak to the Mets has coincided with reigning NL MVP Jimmy Rollins' left ankle injury. Rollins hasn't started since injuring the ankle on April 8 against the Mets, and left the team for a few days because of the death of an uncle.
Though he was slated to return to the club today, it is unknown if he will be able to start today's test. He has appeared as a pinch-hitter three times since his injury.
Today, Philadelphia will turn to its lone pitcher with a win over the Mets this year.
Jamie Moyer, who got a no decision in his most recent start on Sunday against the Cubs, picked up his only win of the season (1-0) when he faced the Mets on April 8. He lasted six innings, giving up just two runs and four hits with three walks in the outing.
The lefty gave up a home run to Carlos Delgado in the second, the eighth home run Delgado has hit off him in 68 career at-bats. Moyer will also have to deal with Wright, who is 9-for-21 (.429) with two homers against him.
The 45-year-old's start against the Mets on April 8 was the 12th of his career against them, and he is 6-3 in that span with a 2.64 earned run average and one shutout.
Oliver Perez will face the Phillies today for the second time this season, and was solid in his first outing against them and Moyer. Perez threw 5 2/3 shutout innings, allowing three hits and three walks in a no decision and left early after throwing 94 pitches.
Ryan Howard went 0-for-4 in that game with an RBI, and has just one hit in 13 at-bats (.077) in his career against Perez, though that lone hit was a home run.
The left-handed Perez was horrid last time out, though, as he got tagged for six runs and eight hits in just 4 1/3 innings. He got another no decision, as the Mets fell to the Brewers, 9-7, on Sunday.
The 26-year-old is 1-3 with a 4.28 ERA in nine career starts against the Phillies.
