(Sports Network) - A.J. Burnett tries to keep Toronto on the winning track this afternoon when the Blue Jays resume their four-game series with the Detroit Tigers at Rogers Centre.
Burnett, who was charged with the loss after an inning of relief in Toronto's 14-inning loss to Texas on Wednesday, is 1-1 on the season, while pitching to a 7.27 earned run average. He surrendered two runs and three hits in the setback to the Rangers.
The 31-year-old right-hander last started back on April 13 against the Rangers and allowed four runs and seven hits in 5 2/3 frames. He did not get a decision in that one, as Texas won the contest, 5-4.
Burnett has faced the Tigers three times and is 1-1 against them with a 9.88 ERA.
Detroit will counter with left-hander Nate Robertson, who had to leave his start on Tuesday against Minnesota because of tightness in his left side. Robertson did not earn a decision in that contest, but allowed four runs and six hits in 6 1/3 innings of the Tigers' 6-5 win.
Robertson is 3-2 lifetime against the Jays with a 4.46 ERA in seven games, six of which have been starts.
In the second game of this set on Saturday, Alex Rios went 2-for-4 with a solo home run, and Dustin McGowan hurled seven solid innings to lead Toronto to a 3-2 win. McGowan (1-1) allowed just two runs while scattering seven hits as the Blue Jays snapped a three-game skid and won at home for the first time since a three-game sweep of the defending World Series champion Boston Red Sox from April 4-6.
B.J. Ryan struck out the side in the ninth to earn his second save.
Matt Stairs finished 2-for-3 and scored a run as the designated hitter in the win, as Jays manager John Gibbons decided to bench struggling Frank Thomas, who is hitless in his last 13 at bats and is batting just .167 on the year. Thomas was furious with the move after the game and blamed it on the fact that he has a $10 million option for next season that only gets picked up if he makes 376 plate appearances.
Ivan Rodriguez went 3-for-3 with a run knocked in and a run scored for the Tigers, while Carlos Guillen went 3-for-4, including a double. Jeremy Bonderman (1-2) took the loss, allowing three runs -- two earned -- on five hits while walking six in five innings.
These clubs split a four-game set in Toronto last April, with the Tigers winning four of their seven overall encounters with the Blue Jays in 2007.
