(Sports Network) - Second-year right-hander Yovani Gallardo makes his first start of 2008 for the Milwaukee Brewers today when they play the skidding Cincinnati Reds in the final game of a three-game weekend series at Great American Ball Park.
Gallardo, a 22-year-old who was 9-5 in 20 appearances - 17 starts - as a rookie with the Brewers in 2007, returned to the big league roster after a stint on the 15-day disabled list with a torn lateral meniscus in his left knee.
He had surgery to repair the problem and is taking what had been the rotation spot of teammate Dave Bush.
Gallardo made one start against the Reds last season and won it, allowing six hits and a run in 6 2/3 innings.
Cincinnati counters with ace Aaron Harang, a 16-game winner in each of the last two seasons. The 6-foot-7, 275-pounder has just one win in four starts this season but did get it against the Brewers, allowing five hits and a run in eight innings of a 4-1 Reds triumph on April 10.
In his other three starts, Harang has given up 17 hits and nine earned runs in 19 innings.
He is 5-3 lifetime against Milwaukee in 15 starts, striking out 88 batters in 100 1/3 innings and posting a 4.31 earned run average.
On Saturday, Bill Hall's two-run double in the 10th inning sent Milwaukee past Cincinnati, 5-3.
Hall drove in three runs for the Brewers, who have won three in a row, including a pair in extra innings. Corey Hart homered and Gabe Gross knocked in the other run.
Guillermo Mota (1-0) hurled two scoreless innings for the victory in relief of starter Jeff Suppan. Suppan allowed three hits and two runs over 6 2/3 innings, while Eric Gagne picked up his sixth save with a scoreless 10th.
Joey Votto hit a two-run shot and Ken Griffey, Jr. also picked up an RBI for the Reds, who have dropped seven of eight.
David Weathers (0-2) absorbed the loss after allowing two runs in two-thirds of an inning. Starter Johnny Cueto was charged with five hits and three runs -- two earned -- over seven full frames.
The Reds took two of three against the Brewers from April 8-10 in Milwaukee, and won eight of their last 15 games in the series last year.
