(Sports Network) - Andy Pettitte takes aim at his third straight win this afternoon, as the New York Yankees try and salvage the finale of their three- game series with the Baltimore Orioles at Camden Yards.
After losing his initial start to the season, Pettitte has responded with back-to-back victories and defeated Tampa Bay in his last trip to the hill on Tuesday. Pettitte, who seems to have put his tumultuous offseason behind him, allowed three runs and nine hits over seven innings to the Rays, as he ran his record to 2-1 to go along with a 3.38 ERA.
Pettitte has not surrendered more than three runs in any of his three starts this season.
The 35-year-old left-hander has dominated the Orioles over the course of his career, going an impressive 22-6 against them with a 3.90 ERA in 34 games, 32 of which have been starts.
Pettitte has usually been the man the Yankees have counted on to bounce back after a loss and they will need him to do so again today, as they lost their third straight game on Saturday, falling to Baltimore, 6-0.
Brian Burres and Jim Johnson combined to throw a six-hit shutout, while Kevin Millar went 2-for-4 with a solo homer to power Baltimore's offense. Ramon Hernandez doubled twice and drove in two and Aubrey Huff doubled and also had two RBI.
Ian Kennedy (0-2) struggled in 2 2/3 innings, giving up four runs on five hits, with five walks and four strikeouts. Joba Chamberlain, who had been on the bereavement list since Monday and missed the Yankees' past five games, returned and threw a scoreless inning of relief.
Alex Rodriguez went 2-for-4, and Derek Jeter tripled for the Yankees, who have been outscored 14-2 so far this series.
If the Orioles are going to complete their first three-game sweep of the Yankees since turning the trick from April 15-17, 2005, they will need a better effort than what they have been getting from Steve Trachsel, who has lost his last two starts.
Trachsel was tagged with the loss on Tuesday against the Toronto Blue Jays and surrendered five runs and five hits in just 2 1/3 innings, as he fell to 1-2 on the season, while raising his ERA to 5.65.
The 37-year-old right-hander is 4-4 lifetime against the Yankees with a 3.63 ERA in 10 starts.
These divisional foes split 18 meetings in 2007, with the Orioles taking five of the nine matchups held in Camden Yards. The Yankees have won 13 of their last 23 games in Baltimore, however.
