(Sports Network) - The Baltimore Orioles have been a surprise this season, but need to play better on the road. Tonight they will open a seven-game swing with the first of three straight contests against the Seattle Mariners at Safeco Field.
The Orioles, who are second in the AL East with an 11-8 record, have lost four of their last five road games and are 2-4 as the visitor in 2008.
Baltimore just had a three-game winning streak stopped with Sunday's 7-1 setback to the New York Yankees in the finale of a three-game series at Camden Yards. Jay Payton went 2-for-4 for the Orioles and Brian Roberts drove in the team's lone run.
O's starter Steve Trachsel threw 6 1/3 solid innings, giving up just three runs on seven hits with five strikeouts and three walks, but was tagged with the loss.
Baltimore will visit the Chicago White Sox for four games later this week.
Jeremy Guthrie will face the Mariners for the second time this season and did not factor in the outcome of a 3-2 Baltimore victory on April 6. Guthrie held Seattle to a pair of runs and six hits over seven innings in that game.
The right-hander is 1-1 with a 4.76 earned run average in three career starts against the Mariners.
Guthrie, who is 0-1 with a 4.38 ERA in four starts this season, has posted three consecutive no decisions, including Thursday's appearance against the White Sox. He allowed four runs -- three earned -- on six hits through six innings of a 6-5 triumph.
The Mariners will begin a six-game homestand versus the Orioles and Athletics tonight and own a 5-3 mark as the host this season. Seattle ended a two-game slide and avoided a series sweep with Sunday's 4-2 victory over the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.
Starting pitcher Miguel Batista worked into the eighth inning, scattering eight hits and walking one batter while fanning eight for the victory. He was then lifted after 7 2/3 frames in favor of Arthur Rhodes, who recorded the final out of the inning. Ryan Rowland-Smith registered the game's last out of to pick up his second save.
Ichiro Suzuki had two hits, including a triple, while knocking in a run and scoring once for the Mariners. Jose Lopez also went 2-for-5 with an RBI, while Richie Sexson clubbed a two-run homer in a winning effort.
Seattle, which will also host Oakland for three straight games on this stand, will send unbeaten starter Felix Hernandez to the mound on Tuesday. Hernandez is 2-0 with a 1.47 ERA in four starts this season and has won back-to-back trips to the rubber. He recorded his first complete game of the season and fourth of his career in a win over Oakland on Wednesday, as he surrendered just two runs -- one earned -- on eight hits.
Hernandez did not factor in the outcome of a loss to Baltimore on April 6, despite allowing just five hits with six strikeouts and a pair of walks in eight scoreless frames. The righty owns a 3-2 record with a 4.57 earned run average over seven career games against the Orioles.
Baltimore swept the Mariners in a four-game series from April 4-7 at Camden Yards. Seattle went 7-2 in the 2007 season series.
