(Sports Network) - Kyle Lohse will aim to continue his excellent start to the season today for the Cardinals, as St. Louis wraps up a quick two-game set with the Milwaukee Brewers at Miller Park.
Lohse, who didn't sign with St. Louis until March 18, is 2-0 with a 1.48 earned run average through four starts, and faced Milwaukee on Thursday. He got a no decision in that contest after giving up two runs and five hits in seven innings of work.
Lohse was spotted a 3-0 lead, but ran into trouble in the eighth inning, as he allowed back-to-back doubles before being lifted. However, the right-hander did not walk a batter, giving him just two free passes over his last three starts. He has also not given up homer yet this season.
That isn't good news for Prince Fielder, who is 0-for-7 lifetime against Lohse and has just one homer on the season after hitting 50 last year. Fielder's lone homer of the season came against the Cardinals last Thursday after Lohse left the game. Fielder blasted a game-winning two-run homer in the 10th inning.
The 29-year-old Lohse is now 3-3 with a 5.21 ERA in nine games (eight starts) lifetime against the Brewers, though he has a 7.04 ERA in four career starts at Miller Park.
The Brewers will hope for some innings out of Manny Parra in today's start. Parra went 5 1/3 frames in winning his first start of the year on April 5, but has posted just four innings of work in each of his last two starts.
The left-hander faced the Cardinals on Thursday and gave up three runs on five hits and a season-high five walks while striking out three. St. Louis' Ryan Ludwick went 2-for-2 with a homer in that game against Parra, while Lohse drove in a pair of runs off of his counterpart. Parra got a no decision to remain at 1-1 on the season with a 5.40 ERA.
Parra, 25, was facing the Cardinals for just the third time and for the second time as a starter. He has a 3.55 ERA versus St. Louis without a decision.
The Cardinals won the opener of this set on Monday, as Skip Schumaker drove in the game-winning run in the ninth inning of a 4-3 victory. Schumaker hit a double off of Derrick Turnbow (0-1) to plate Brian Barton.
Troy Glaus drove in a pair of runs while Ryan Franklin (1-1) got the win as he gave up one run on three hits in one inning of work for the Cardinals, who had dropped three of four coming into the game. Adam Wainwright started on the mound and gave up two runs on four hits in seven innings of work.
Rickie Weeks, Ryan Braun and Corey Hart each drove in a run for the Brewers, who have dropped their last two games. Carlos Villanueva got the start and gave up two runs on three hits in seven innings of work.
St. Louis took two of three from Milwaukee when the teams met from April 15-17 at Busch Stadium this season, and the Cardinals are 31-20 versus the Brewers since the start of the 2005 season.
