(Sports Network) - The St. Louis Cardinals attempt to bounce back from a disappointing loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates when the two National League Central members conclude a two-game set tonight at PNC Park.
Pittsburgh rallied from an early four-run deficit to post a 7-4 victory over the Cardinals in Wednesday's series opener. The Pirates scored three times in the bottom of the eighth inning, with Jose Bautista singling home Ryan Doumit for the go-ahead run.
Doug Mientkiewicz added a pinch-hit two-run single during the frame for Pittsburgh, which has now won two in a row following a six-game slide. Jason Bay belted a two-run homer earlier in the game and finished 2-for-4, while Freddy Sanchez collected a pair of hits and scored twice.
Damaso Marte picked up the victory with two scoreless innings of relief, with Matt Capps throwing a 1-2-3 ninth for his sixth save.
Anthony Reyes (1-1) surrendered all three Pittsburgh runs in his lone inning of work to suffer the loss.
St. Louis, which fell for the fourth time in five games, scored all of its runs in the first inning. Troy Glaus knocked in the first two with a double and Adam Kennedy had a two-run single to give the Cards a quick 4-0 advantage.
Tonight's matchup features a pair of badly struggling hurlers, with the Pirates' Tom Gorzelanny hoping to get back on track following a string of poor outings and St. Louis' Joel Pineiro still attempting to find his way back from an early-season injury.
Gorzelanny, a 14-game winner for Pittsburgh last year, brings an ugly 9.35 earned run average into this evening's tilt and is coming off an especially bad showing in Chicago on Saturday. The young lefty was tagged for seven runs and six hits while lasting just 2 2/3 innings in a 13-1 loss to the Cubs.
The 25-year-old pitched more like his 2007 form in his previous start, when Gorzelanny held Cincinnati to one run and four hits over 6 1/3 innings to notch his lone win this season.
He faced the Cardinals four times last year and compiled a 3.04 ERA in 26 2/3 innings of work against St. Louis, although he went 1-2 over those games.
Pineiro began the season on the disabled list with shoulder inflammation and was hit hard by San Francisco in his return to the mound on April 13. He pitched better in a rematch with the Giants on Saturday, allowing three runs and walking just one batter in 6 1/3 innings, but received no offensive support in a 3-0 defeat.
The Puerto Rico native has won both of his previous starts versus Pittsburgh and surrendered only three runs over 13 2/3 innings against the Bucs. One of those victories came last September at Busch Stadium, with Pineiro limiting the Pirates to two runs in 5 2/3 frames.
St. Louis won 12 of its 18 encounters with Pittsburgh last season and went 7-2 at PNC Park a year ago. In their most recent visit to the Steel City prior to last night, the Cardinals swept a three-game set from the Bucs in late September.
