(Sports Network) - The Chicago White Sox will attempt to build off an exciting victory on Thursday as they start up a four-game series with the visiting Baltimore Orioles tonight at U.S. Cellular Field.
The Sox avoided a possible three-game home sweep at the hands of the New York Yankees with last night's 7-6 win. Joe Crede singled with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning to bring home Carlos Quentin with the winning run and deal Yankees phenom Joba Chamberlain his first major league loss.
Jim Thome added a solo home run for Chicago and Paul Konerko finished 2-for-4 with an RBI single. Closer Bobby Jenks picked up the win after getting the final two outs of the top of the ninth with the potential go-ahead run in scoring position.
New York trailed 6-3 after five innings but scored twice against White Sox starter Gavin Floyd in the sixth, then tied the game at 6-6 on Morgan Ensberg's single off reliever Matt Thornton.
Chicago's Jermaine Dye went 1-for-3 with an RBI single but had to leave last night's contest after six innings with a strained groin. The veteran right fielder is not expected to be in the lineup tonight.
The White Sox will be taking on a Baltimore club that has won five of its last seven outings and just took the final two tests of a three-game series in Seattle. In Thursday's rubber match with the Mariners, Brian Roberts went 2- for-4 and smacked a tie-breaking solo home run in the top of the eighth inning that lifted the Orioles to an 8-7 triumph.
Adam Jones ended 3-for-4 with three RBI for the Orioles, while Jay Payton also collected two hits and knocked in a run to aid in the victory.
Baltimore overcame a poor showing from starting pitcher Adam Loewen, as the young lefty was rocked for five runs on four hits and issued three walks before being yanked after 2 2/3 innings. Chad Bradford (2-1) earned the win with 1 1/3 shutout frames of relief, with ex-Mariner George Sherrill tossing a scoreless ninth to notch his eighth save of the campaign.
The Orioles will be counting on a better showing from Brian Burres in this evening's tilt. The southpaw came through with a big effort his last time out, as Burres worked 5 2/3 shutout innings against the Yankees on Saturday to lead Baltimore to a 6-0 decision.
Burres has compiled a 2-1 mark and a solid 3.63 earned run average through three starts and one relief appearance this month, although he has walked 10 batters over 17 1/3 innings.
The 27-year-old had a horrific start at U.S. Cellular Field last July, however. Burres was tagged for seven runs on six hits -- including a pair of home runs -- before being pulled with one out in the second inning during an 11-6 loss to Chicago. That was his only career start against the White Sox.
Mark Buehrle will take the mound tonight for Chicago and will be seeking to end a two-start losing streak. The battle-tested lefty was hit hard by Tampa Bay last Saturday, surrendering 12 hits and five runs in a seven-inning stint during the White Sox' 5-0 setback.
Buehrle was a hard-luck loser in his previous trip to the hill, as he limited Oakland to two runs in seven frames but wound up on the short end of a 2-1 decision.
He has had good success when facing Baltimore over his career, as Buehrle brings a 4-2 record with a 2.27 ERA in 11 games (9 starts) against the Orioles.
These teams split a two-game series in Baltimore last week, but the Orioles have emerged victorious in four of their last five meetings with the Sox. The Orioles drew even with Chicago in a four-game set at U.S. Cellular Field last July.
