(Sports Network) - Ervin Santana tries to cool off Detroit's red-hot offense this evening when the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim open a three-game set with the Tigers at Comerica Park.
The Tigers seem to have turned it around after an 0-7 start. On Thursday they completed a three-game sweep of the Texas Rangers, as Magglio Ordonez went 3- for-4, blasted a pair of home runs and drove in four, lifting Detroit to an 8-2 win. Curtis Granderson, Brandon Inge and Ryan Raburn also went deep for the Tigers, who have won four straight games overall, outscoring their opponents 42-11 in that span.
Zach Miner (1-1) notched the win by striking out three without allowing a hit in 3 1/3 innings of relief for starter Jeremy Bonderman, who issued a career-high seven walks with seven strikeouts over 4 2/3 frames.
Santana now has the unenviable task of slowing down a Tigers' lineup tonight that could have all its pieces together for the first time all season. Granderson returned on Tuesday, Placido Polanco came back on Thursday and Gary Sheffield could play tonight after sitting out the last five games with a right shoulder injury.
The 25-year-old Santana has won his last two starts and is 3-0 on the year with a 2.67 ERA. Santana's most recent win came on Saturday against Seattle, which managed just a run and three hits off of the right-hander in eight frames.
Santana has faced the Tigers four times in his career and is 2-2 against them with a 5.82 ERA.
Los Angeles enters this series riding a winning streak of its own after taking the final two contests of its three-game set with the Boston Red Sox, including a 7-5 win on Thursday at Fenway Park. Gary Matthews finished 3-for-5 with three runs batted in, while Erick Aybar added two hits, an RBI and a pair of runs scored for the Angels, who have won five of seven overall.
Joe Saunders (4-0) allowed seven hits and three runs over six innings to record the win.
Getting the call for the Tigers tonight will be left-hander Nate Robertson, who is 0-2 with a 7.48 earned run average. Robertson was tagged with the loss on Sunday against Toronto, allowing five runs and eight hits in five innings.
Getting off the schneid tonight maybe easier said than done for Robertson, who is 0-4 lifetime versus the Angels with an 8.91 ERA in seven starts.
The Angels won five of their eight meetings with the Tigers a year ago and are 16-10 in the series since the start of the 2005 campaign. LA is also 6-5 in Motown in that time.
