(Sports Network) - Arizona rising star Micah Owings will try to keep his perfect pitching mark intact this afternoon, when the Diamondbacks continue a three-game series against the San Diego Padres at Petco Park.
Owings is 4-0 with a 2.42 ERA in four starts thus far in 2008, and has lasted at least 6 1/3 innings in each of those outings. He hasn't allowed more than three runs in any of those starts, either.
In his last trip to the mound on Monday against San Francisco, Owings nailed down another win with 6 1/3 innings of two-run ball in a 4-2 victory. The righty has yet to post a victory against San Diego in his career, as he sports an 0-1 mark with a 3.94 ERA in three appearances.
Arizona has won two in a row and eight of its last 10 games, including Friday's 5-1 victory over the Padres in the opener of the series. Mark Reynolds hit a three-run homer and Randy Johnson threw six solid innings, as the Diamondbacks improved to an MLB-best 17-6 on the season.
Johnson surrendered just one run on three hits, while walking two and fanning seven to earn his first win since June 10, 2007. Orlando Hudson went 2-for-5 with an RBI for Arizona. Outfielder Eric Byrnes missed his second straight game with a leg injury and is questionable for tonight.
San Diego has dropped five in a row and nine of 10 games. In Friday's setback to the D'Backs, starting pitcher Randy Wolf lost for the first time this season after giving up five runs on seven hits in just four innings of work.
Callix Crabbe drove in the lone run for the Padres, who are last in the NL West standings -- 8 1/2 games behind the division-leading Diamondbacks.
Padres starter Justin Germano is still in search of his first win of the 2008 campaign. He will take on the D'Backs today, and is 0-2 with a 5.01 earned run average through four starts.
Germano has dropped consecutive starts since opening the campaign with back- to-back no-decisions, and last pitched on Monday at Houston. He lasted a season-low 3 1/3 innings and yielded 10 runs and 10 hits in a 10-3 setback.
The right-handed Germano is 2-1 with a 3.63 ERA in four career games (three starts) against Arizona.
The Diamondbacks just took two of three games against San Diego from April 18-20, and are 13-9 in the last 22 meetings in the series.
