(Sports Network) - The Philadelphia Phillies will wrap up a seven-game road trip this afternoon, when they take on the Pittsburgh Pirates in the finale of a three-game series at PNC Park.
Philadelphia has won three straight and six of its last seven games, and improved to 5-1 on the trek following Saturday's 8-4 victory over the Bucos. The Phillies got the ball rolling early with a five-run first inning, highlighted by Ryan Howard's two-run homer. Chase Utley had two hits and a pair of runs scored in his 14th multi-hit game of the season, while Geoff Jenkins added two hits and an RBI in the win.
Second-year starter Kyle Kendrick worked seven-plus innings and allowed four runs -- three earned -- on seven hits. He also struck out two and did not walk a batter. Rudy Seanez and Ryan Madson each threw a scoreless inning of relief.
The Phillies will open a six-game homestand versus San Diego and San Francisco following today's finale.
Philly Opening Day starter Brett Myers gets the nod today, and is 2-1 with a 4.78 ERA in five starts this season. Myers is 2-0 over the last three starts, but could have certainly ended up on the losing side of his previous outing. In an 8-6 win over Colorado on Tuesday, Myers did not factor in the outcome despite allowing six runs and 11 hits in seven innings.
The fiery right-hander, who has lasted at least five innings in each of his appearances this season, owns a 2-3 record with a 2.31 ERA in six career games (five starts) against Pittsburgh.
In last night's loss, Nate McLouth homered and Freddy Sanchez had two hits and knocked in a run for the Pirates, who have dropped three straight and eight of their last 10 overall.
Starting pitcher Matt Morris struggled, allowing six runs -- three earned -- on six hits in just 1 2/3 innings. Morris is 0-4 so far in his first season with the Pirates.
Paul Maholm will take the ball for the Bucos on Sunday, and is 1-2 with a 4.22 earned run average in four starts this season.
Maholm posted his first win of the season on April 22, when the Pirates recorded a 3-2 victory over the Florida Marlins. He held Florida to one run on four hits over six innings of work.
The left-handed Mississippi State product owns a 2-1 mark with a 6.50 ERA in three career starts against the Phillies.
Philadelphia won four of six versus the Pirates last year, and is 4-5 over the last nine games in the Steel City.
