(Sports Network) - Dan Haren Will try to rebound from his first loss in an Arizona uniform, as the Diamondbacks begin a 10-game homestand tonight with the opener of three straight versus the Houston Astros at Chase Field.
After a no-decision in his Diamondbacks debut, Haren won three straight starts -- all at home -- while pitching to a 0.95 earned run average in that span. However, the right-hander fell in defeat on Wednesday versus the Dodgers, as he was hammered for six runs (5 earned) on nine hits with five strikeouts over a season-low 4 2/3 frames in Los Angeles.
Haren, who spent his last three seasons with Oakland, is 0-2 with a 4.63 ERA in three games (2 starts) versus the Astros. His stellar pitching at home is a big reason that Arizona is 9-2 at Chase Field this year.
Arizona continues to hold the best record in all of baseball, and took two of three over National League West-rival San Diego over the weekend. That includes a Sunday affair that saw Brandon Webb outduel Jake Peavy in a 2-1 victory.
Webb (6-0) hurled six innings, allowing an unearned run on five hits while striking out five and walking four as the Diamondbacks picked up their fifth win in seven games.
Chris Snyder accounted for the offense with a two-run homer, while Stephen Drew was 1-for-3 and scored. Brandon Lyon notched his seventh save of the season in the win.
Arizona played without Justin Upton on Sunday after the outfielder left Saturday's game due to cramping in his left hamstring. He is day-to-day with the injury, and is batting .333 with five homers and 14 runs batted in on the season.
Houston was on a six-game winning streak before losing its last two versus St. Louis over the weekend. That includes a 5-1 setback on Sunday. Brandon Backe (1-3) allowed four runs on five hits and five walks over his five innings in the loss.
Mark Loretta drove in the lone Houston run and the club fell to 3-2 on its current eight-game road trip.
Tonight's starter for Houston, Chris Simpson, toes the rubber after posting his first win of the season last time out. The right-hander went 0-2 through his first three starts -- including an outing on April 18 that saw him last just two-thirds of an inning -- before downing Cincinnati on Wednesday. Simpson held the Reds to two runs on eight hits over seven innings with a season-high six strikeouts.
Simpson is 0-2 with a 4.15 ERA in two career starts against Arizona. The 29- year-old last faced the Diamondbacks on May 26 at Chase Field and yielded three runs over six innings.
Arizona center fielder Chris Young, who is batting just .224 on the season, is 3-for-5 in his career against Simpson with two homers and three RBI.
The Diamondbacks won five of seven versus the Astros last year, including a four-game sweep at home in late May. They outscored Houston 35-12 in that set.
