(Sports Network) - Mike Mussina tries to string back-to-back wins together for the first time this season when the New York Yankees conclude a four-game series with the Cleveland Indians tonight at Progressive Field.
With his spot in the rotation being questioned after a rough start to the season, Mussina put forth a tremendous effort on Wednesday against the Chicago White Sox. He gave up two runs and four hits in seven innings to improve to 2-3 on the season, while lowering his earned run average to 4.94.
The 39-year-old right-hander, whose early season struggles drew the ire of team owner Hank Steinbrenner, has faced the Indians 25 times over the course of his career and is 11-9 with a 4.78 ERA against them.
New York can only hope that Mussina gives the Yankees the same type of performance that it received from Chien-Ming Wang on Sunday. Wang scattered four hits over seven scoreless innings en route to a 1-0 New York victory over the Indians in the third game of this set.
Wang (5-0) struck out nine and only walked two batters as he became the first American League pitcher to win five games this season and the first Yankees pitcher to open a season 5-0 since Kevin Brown in 2004.
Joba Chamberlain struck out two in a scoreless eighth inning and Mariano Rivera notched his seventh save of the year by striking out two in a perfect ninth. The save was the 450th of Rivera's illustrious career.
Melky Cabrera's solo homer was all the offense the Yankees would need as they snapped a three-game slide.
All the news was not good for the Yankees, though, as it appears catcher Jorge Posada is headed to the disabled list for the first time in his career because of a shoulder injury. Posada is expected to meet with noted orthopedic surgeon Dr. James Andrews, who repaired his torn labrum in 2001.
Jason Michaels had a double for the Indians, who saw their five-game win streak derailed, in Sunday's setback. David Dellucci recorded a hit in the loss as did Victor Martinez, who extended his hit streak to nine games.
Indians outfielder Grady Sizemore missed the contest due to a sprained ankle, ending his consecutive games played streak at 382, which had been the longest active such string in the majors.
C.C. Sabathia (1-4) absorbed the loss for Cleveland despite hurling eight innings in which he struck out eight batters, walked just one and was touched for only four hits. He fell to 1-8 lifetime against the Yankees.
Cleveland will hand the ball to Aaron Laffey tonight as he gets a spot start filling in for Jake Westbrook, who is on the DL. Laffey, who has never faced the Yankees, was 4-2 with a 4.56 ERA in nine starts for the Tribe a year ago.
New York swept the regular season series from Cleveland last year, winning all six matchups. The Yankees have also won nine of their last 11 overall games in the series and six of their last eight in Cleveland.
