(Sports Network) - Andy Pettitte tries to bounce back from his worst outing of the season this evening when the New York Yankees continue their three-game series with the Detroit Tigers at Yankee Stadium.
Pettitte had his three-game winning streak stopped on Friday in Cleveland, as the Indians managed five runs (four earned) on eight hits -- two home runs -- in five innings, dropping him to 3-2 on the year to go along with a 3.23 earned run average.
The 35-year-old left-hander has faced the Tigers 22 times over the course of his 14-year career, going 10-8 against them with a 3.49 ERA.
Detroit will counter with righty Jeremy Bonderman, who is 1-2 on the season with a 4.28 ERA. Bonderman is winless in his last three starts and earned a no-decision his last time out on Thursday against Texas, despite a pretty solid outing. He surrendered a pair of runs and two hits, while walking seven batters over just 4 2/3 innings of his team's 8-2 win.
Bonderman, who has walked 13 batters over his last two starts spanning 9 2/3 innings, is 2-6 lifetime against the Yankees with a 5.58 ERA in 10 games, nine of which have been starts.
On Tuesday, Curtis Granderson went 2-for-3 with a solo home run and a double, and finished with three runs scored to lead Detroit to a 6-4 victory in the opener of this series. Placido Polanco went 4-for-5 with a double, two runs scored and an RBI for the Tigers, who have alternated wins and losses the last five games.
Gary Sheffield hit a two-run homer against his former team and Magglio Ordonez also knocked in a pair of runs.
Kenny Rogers (2-3) got the win after he yielded only two runs on six hits in six innings on the hill. Todd Jones earned his fifth save of the year, despite a shaky ninth inning in which he gave up a run, a walk and threw a wild pitch.
Robinson Cano did his best to bust out of his slump by crushing a two-run home run for the Yankees, who have dropped four of their last six contests overall. Jason Giambi and Derek Jeter both recorded an RBI in the loss. Shelley Duncan had a double, walked three times and scored two runs in defeat.
Phil Hughes (0-4) got the loss after he was touched for six runs on eight hits in 3 2/3 innings of work, and saw his ERA inflate to 9.00. New York's bullpen of Ross Ohlendorf, Edwar Ramirez and LaTroy Hawkins was solid, however, giving up three hits, six strikeouts and one walk in 5 1/3 innings of scoreless ball.
The news got worse for the Yankees after the game, as they placed star third baseman Alex Rodriguez on the 15-day disabled list because of a Grade 2 strain of his right quadriceps. The three-time AL MVP is on the DL for the first time since 2000.
Of course, the Yanks are also playing without catcher Jorge Posada, who is on the DL for the first time in his career.
These teams split their eight matchups last season, but the Yankees are 14-8 in the series since the start of the 2005 campaign, including wins in eight of the 11 regular-season meetings in the Bronx over that time.
