(Sports Network) - Fresh off a much-needed victory, the New York Yankees will attempt to make it two in a row over the visiting Seattle Mariners as the two teams continue a three-game weekend set.
The Yankees started off their current nine-game homestand in unwanted fashion, as the Bronx Bombers lost all three meetings with the Detroit Tigers prior to this set.
Fortunately, Chien-Ming Wang hurled six solid innings last night, and Melky Cabrera added a two-run double as New York downed Seattle, 5-1.
Wang (6-0) allowed just one run on three hits to become the American League's first six-game winner for the Yankees. The Taiwanese star is also a perfect 7-0 against the Mariners in seven career starts.
Kyle Farnsworth, Joba Chamberlain and Mariano Rivera finished things with an inning of scoreless relief apiece.
Rivera has not given up a run in 12 innings pitched this season.
Erik Bedard (2-1) was the hard-luck loser for the Mariners, who committed four errors. The Seattle ace surrendered just three runs -- one earned -- on four hits, while walking just one and fanning six.
Raul Ibanez was 1-for-4 and had the only RBI for Seattle. Ichiro Suzuki was 2- for-4 and had three stolen bases.
Seattle has endured its share of recent struggles, as the M's enter today's tilt with losses in seven of their last nine games, including three straight.
Young Felix Hernandez will be on the hill for Seattle this afternoon hoping to improve his already solid 2-1 record and 2.22 ERA. In his most recent outing on Sunday, Hernandez surrendered four earned runs in seven innings against Oakland en route to his first loss of the season. Hernandez has worked into the seventh inning in each of his starts thus far.
In his career against the Yankees, Hernandez is 1-2 with a 4.83 ERA.
Veteran righty Mike Mussina is slated to get the ball for the Yankees today. Through six starts, Mussina is 3-3 with a 4.73 ERA, and he is coming off a win over Cleveland on Monday that saw him allow two earned runs in five innings of work. Although he has posted only 12 strikeouts in 32 1/3 innings of work, Mussina has handed out a mere five walks.
Mussina is 17-5 lifetime against Seattle with a 3.75 ERA.
These teams split 10 meetings last season, with the Yankees winning four of the seven encounters held in the Bronx. Seattle is just 4-10 at Yankee Stadium since 2005.
