(Sports Network) - Mired in a season-high losing streak, the Baltimore Orioles will attempt to reverse their recent fortunes in this afternoon's finale of a three-game series with the Oakland Athletics from McAfee Coliseum.
Baltimore dropped its fourth contest in a row with Tuesday's 4-2 setback to the A's, with the club mustering just four hits against Justin Duchscherer and a pair of Oakland relievers.
Duchscherer (3-1) worked the first seven innings and yielded a pair of runs to help the Athletics to their third straight win. Santiago Casilla threw a scoreless ninth to record his first save of the season.
Frank Thomas had a pair of hits and scored twice to lead Oakland offensively. Emil Brown, who had the winning single in Monday's 2-1, 10-inning victory over the Orioles, had two more hits and an RBI on Tuesday.
Baltimore starter Brian Burres (3-3) took the loss after he was charged with eight hits and four runs -- three earned -- over 5 1/3 innings.
The Orioles are 1-4 at the midway point of their 10-game road trip and fell to 6-11 away from home this year with Tuesday's loss. Following today's tussle, Baltimore will visit Kansas City for a four-game set.
Jeremy Guthrie will attempt to win back-to-back starts for the first time in more than nine months when the steady right-hander toes the rubber for Baltimore today.
Guthrie finally put an end to a string of 15 straight winless outings when he bested the Angels in Friday's opener of the Orioles' current road trip. The Stanford product held Anaheim to two runs and just three hits over seven innings, while notching a season-best six strikeouts as well.
That was Guthrie's first victory since he bested the New York Yankees on July 27 of last season, the last of a stretch of three consecutive winning starts for the 29-year-old. One of those triumphs came against the Athletics in Oakland, where Guthrie fired seven shutout innings to lead Baltimore to a 2-0 decision on July 22, 2007.
For his career, Guthrie is 1-1 with a 1.80 earned run average in three games (2 starts) versus Oakland.
The A's counter with hard-luck hurler Joe Blanton, who brings a 2-5 ledger into today's tilt despite having posted a respectable 3.88 ERA and working seven innings or more in five straight starts.
Blanton suffered his third defeat in his last four mound trips Friday against Texas, yielding four runs on seven hits over seven frames in a 4-3 setback. The durable righty didn't get much assistance from his defense on that night, as Oakland committed four errors which made two of Blanton's runs allowed unearned.
The Kentucky native did struggle badly in a pair of starts against Baltimore last season. Blanton surrendered 13 earned runs and 20 hits over a combined 11 2/3 innings in those games -- both losses -- and is 2-3 with a 3.98 ERA in five lifetime matchups with the Orioles.
Oakland has now won 10 of its last 15 encounters with Baltimore and has a chance to produce its first sweep of the Orioles since taking four straight games at Camden Yards from August 26-29, 2005.
