(Sports Network) - Right-handed phenom Edinson Volquez looks for an eighth straight quality start tonight when the Cincinnati Reds host the Florida Marlins in game two of a four-game series at Great American Ball Park.
Volquez, acquired from Texas in the offseason for Josh Hamilton, has allowed one earned run or less in all seven of his outings in 2008, including a 9-0 defeat of the Chicago Cubs on May 7, in which he gave up four hits in seven innings.
The defeat of Chicago came one start after his lone loss of the season, a 2-0 verdict against Atlanta in which the 24-year-old surrendered just four hits and an earned run in six innings.
Overall, in 42 1/3 innings of work, he's permitted just 28 hits and five earned runs, walking 24 and striking out 52.
Previously, he'd struggled in two brief stints with the Rangers, combining to allow 86 hits and 44 earned runs in 67 1/3 innings in 2006 and 2007, going 3-7 in 14 starts.
He has never faced the Marlins.
Veteran lefty Mark Hendrickson extended his unbeaten streak to seven starts on May 8 against Milwaukee.
The former long reliever, who'd made just 15 starts in 38 appearances last season with the Los Angeles Dodgers, got a no-decision against the Brewers after allowing seven hits and one run in 4 1/3 innings.
He's not lost since his initial outing of the season, when he dropped a 7-2 decision to the New York Mets.
In seven outings since, he's given up 39 hits and 13 earned runs in 43 innings.
Hendrickson is 0-1 in four career starts against the Reds with an 8.84 earned run average in 18 1/3 innings.
On Monday, Jeff Keppinger and Brandon Phillips each hit two-run homers to help the Reds down the Marlins, 8-7. Corey Patterson went 4-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI while Adam Dunn also drove in a run for the Reds, who have won two of their last three games.
Aaron Harang (2-5) got his first win since April 10 as he gave up four runs on seven hits in seven innings of work. He had dropped his past four decisions.
Dan Uggla went 2-for-2 with a solo home run and scored three times while Jeremy Hermida added a solo home run and scored twice for the Marlins, who had a season-high seven-game winning streak stopped.
Burke Badenhop got the start and was charged with four runs -- three earned -- on six hits in six innings of work. Taylor Tankersley (0-1) got the loss for giving up four runs in the seventh.
Cincinnati went 4-3 against the Marlins in 2007, with a 3-0 mark at Great American Ball Park. The Reds are 9-5 in the last 14 meetings in this series, including a 6-1 ledger at home.
