Game 2: New York - Claudio Vargas (0-1, 2.84) Atlanta - Jorge Campillo (0-0, 1.27)
(Sports Network) - Atlanta future Hall of Fame pitcher Tom Glavine will face his former team this afternoon, when the Braves open a four-game series versus the New York Mets with a day-night doubleheader at Turner Field.
Glavine spent the past five seasons with the Mets before returning to the ballclub that selected him in the second round of the 1984 draft. Glavine, who signed a one-year deal with Atlanta in November, compiled a 61-56 record and 3.97 earned run average with New York, and last year went 13-8 with a 4.45 ERA. He became the 23rd major leaguer to reach 300 wins on August 5, 2007, when the Mets beat the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field.
The left-hander is 1-1 with a 4.41 earned run average through seven starts with the Braves this season. Glavine posted his first win of the campaign on May 14 at Philadelphia after yielding four runs and four hits during 5 2/3 innings of an 8-6 victory. Atlanta is now 2-5 in his seven starts.
Glavine is 16-7 with three complete games and a 2.86 ERA over 35 career starts against the NL East-rival Mets.
Atlanta will resume a season-long 11-game homestand versus Oakland, New York and Arizona, and is an NL-best 16-5 at Turner Field this season. The Braves opened the lengthy homestand by winning two of three games versus the Athletics, including Sunday's 5-2 victory in the rubber match of the set.
Yunel Escobar went 3-for-4 and drove in a pair of runs, while Omar Infante added a two-run triple and Gregor Blanco finished with two hits and scored a run for the Braves, who have alternated wins and losses over their previous eight games. Jo-Jo Reyes gave up two runs on eight hits and struck out six batters in five-plus innings for the win.
Taking the ball for the Braves in the second game will be Jorge Campillo, who is 0-0 with a 1.27 ERA in 13 relief appearances this season. Campillo has made one start in his career and is coming off back-to-back games against the Philadelphia Phillies. He tossed one-third of an inning in a 5-4 loss on May 13 before yielding five hits in three frames of a 5-0 setback two days later.
The right-hander faced the Mets for the first time in his career on April 26 this season at Shea Stadium. Campillo recorded four K's and a walk through two innings of a 4-3 loss.
New York just completed a rain-shortened sweep of the cross-town rival Yankees with Sunday night's 11-2 pounding in the Bronx. Jose Reyes hit a three-run homer, while Ryan Church homered and ended with two RBI for New York, which has won six of its last 10 games. Oliver Perez pitched 7 2/3 solid innings, allowing just two runs on three hits.
The Mets will resume their current road trip with four games at Atlanta and three more at Colorado.
John Maine will take on Glavine in the first game of this twinbill on Tuesday, and is 4-0 with a 2.13 ERA over his last four starts. Maine improved to 5-2 with a 2.81 ERA in eight starts this season with six strong innings versus Washington on May 13. Maine yielded two runs -- one earned -- in six frames of a 6-3 victory at Shea Stadium.
The right-hander defeated Atlanta on April 26 this season, pitching five solid innings of two-run ball during a 4-3 triumph. Maine is 2-2 with a 4.61 ERA in five career starts against the Braves.
Claudio Vargas gets the nod for the Mets in the nightcap, and will make his second start of the 2008 campaign. Vargas made his New York debut on May 14 versus Washington, surrendering a pair of runs and three hits in six innings of a 4-3 loss. Vargas inked a minor league deal with the Mets in April after being released by Milwaukee just before the start of the season. He went 1-1 with a 4.91 ERA in two starts at Triple-A New Orleans.
Vargas sports a 4-1 record and 4.47 earned run average in 14 career games, six of which have been starts, against the Braves.
New York is a game behind Florida for the top spot in the NL East standings, while the Braves are two games off the pace. Atlanta leads the season series against New York by a 3-2 count, with a 2-0 record in Dixie.
