(Sports Network) - The Tampa Rays shoot for another sweep at home, as they conclude a three-game set with the Baltimore Orioles today at Tropicana Field.
The Rays have been simply outstanding at home this season, winning 14 of their last 15 outings in St. Petersburg. Courtesy of an 11-4 win over the Orioles last night, Tampa now has a chance to wrap up its fourth home sweep in its last five series at the Trop.
James Shields has been outstanding for the Rays this season and he will try to secure the sweep today. The right-hander has been tremendous at home this season, logging a 3-1 record with a 1.41 ERA in five starts. Opponents are batting just .165 against Shields at Tropicana Field this season.
Shields, though, is coming off one of his poorest outings of the season, allowing five earned runs and eight hits over 7 2/3 innings of the Rays' eventual 7-6 win against Oakland on Monday. He did not earn a decision, but he did give up a season-high three home runs.
In nine career starts against the Orioles, Shields is 2-1 with a 3.48 ERA. He is 1-0 with a 2.77 ERA in two starts against Baltimore this season.
Getting the nod for the Orioles will be Daniel Cabrera, who is 3-0 with a 2.35 ERA over his last three starts. He has lasted at least seven innings in each of past four starts and has surrendered just three walks over that stretch.
Cabrera was last in action on Tuesday, when he limited the New York Yankees to just two earned runs and five hits over seven innings of a 12-2 triumph. He struck out four and walked none in the win.
The right-hander is a perfect 6-0 with a 3.43 ERA in 13 career starts against the Rays, but he has a 5.91 ERA in two starts against them this season. He did not receive a decision in either game.
Cabrera will need to be at his best, as Baltimore has scored a total of just five runs during a current four game losing streak.
On Saturday, Evan Longoria homered twice and drove in six runs as the Rays torched Steve Trachsel for nine runs in less than two innings on their way to an 11-4 win.
Carlos Pena was 3-for-3 with a double, a triple and three runs batted in for the Rays, who have won two straight and four of five. B.J. Upton went 4-for-4 with a pair of doubles, two RBI and three runs scored, while Carl Crawford had a pair of hits and scored three times.
Edwin Jackson (3-3) earned the win, allowing three runs on four hits in five innings, walking five and striking out two.
Trachsel (2-5) was shelled for nine runs on seven hits in 1 2/3 frames for the Orioles. Luke Scott belted a two-run home run, while Guillermo Quiroz and Jay Payton each drove in a run.
These AL East foes have met 10 times already this season, with the Rays winning seven of those tests. Tampa Bay took two of three games from the Orioles in St. Petersburg from April 11-13.
