(Sports Network) - The Philadelphia Phillies have been lighting up the scoreboard at a torrid pace and will try for an encore performance tonight, as they resume a three-game series versus the Colorado Rockies at Citizens Bank Park.
The outburst began in Sunday's series finale of a four-game set against the Houston Astros at Minute Maid Park, where the Phillies earned a split of the series following a 15-6 drubbing. The win ended a two-game slide and set the stage for Monday's opener with Colorado, as Philadelphia registered a 20-5 triumph to open a 10-game homestand versus Colorado, Florida and Cincinnati.
It was the largest margin of victory for Philadelphia this season, surpassing a 10-run win against Washington on May 21. Also, it was the most runs for the Phils since a 21-8 home win over the Cubs on July 3, 1999. The Phils are the first team to score at least 15 runs in consecutive games since the New York Yankees did it in July of last season. The Yankees hammered Tampa Bay, 17-5, on July 21 before handing the Rays a 21-4 setback the next day.
Chase Utley led the charge last night with a three-run homer and a career-high six RBI, while Chris Coste had four RBI, including a three-run blast, in the win. Pedro Feliz went 4-for-6 with four RBI and two runs scored for the Phillies, who have won five of their last seven games. Phillies starter Jamie Moyer benefited from all the run support as he recorded the win and was charged with four runs on six hits in seven innings of work. Moyer has now beaten every team in the major leagues. He entered the contest 0-4 lifetime against the Rockies.
Second-year hurler Kyle Kendrick will handle pitching duties this evening for the Phillies, and is 3-2 with a 5.19 ERA in 10 starts this season. Kendrick is only 2-0 over his previous seven starts, with Philadelphia going 6-1 over that span. Kendrick last pitched on Thursday at Houston, yielding five runs and eight hits in eight innings of a 7-5 victory for a no-decision.
Kendrick squared off with the Rockies at Coors Field on April 21 this season, and did not factor in the outcome of a 9-5 victory. The righty was reached for five runs and eight hits in five frames of work, falling to 0-1 with a 7.71 ERA over three career starts against Colorado.
Ryan Spilborghs hit a three-run homer for the Rockies yesterday and starter Jorge De La Rosa was banged up for seven runs -- six earned -- on four hits in 3 1/3 innings of work for the loss. Colorado has dropped four of six and 10 of its last 15 games. It has lost six in a row as the guest and is 0-1 so far on a 10-game swing through Philly, Chicago and Los Angeles.
Ubaldo Jimenez will toe the rubber for the Rox tonight, and he is 1-4 with a 4.61 ERA in 10 trips to the hill. Jimenez is winless in his last eight starts (0-3) -- all Colorado losses -- and posted a no-decision on May 21 versus San Francisco. He hurled seven shutout innings of three-hit ball, but the Rockies suffered a 3-2 setback at Coors Field.
The right-hander made his first-ever appearance against Philadelphia on September 10, 2007, allowing two runs and four hits in six frames of a 6-5 loss for the no-decision. Jimenez then tossed 6 1/3 innings of one-run ball a few weeks in an October 6 playoff game, but did not factor in the 2-1 win.
These two teams met at Coors Field on April 21-22 this season, with the Phillies sweeping a two-game series. Philadelphia is 14-9 in the last 23 regular-season meetings with the Rockies.
