New York Mets (30-28) at San Diego Padres (24-37), 10:05 p.m.

(Sports Network) - In an up-and-down season for the Mets this year, Jose Reyes being on base has been the one constant as of late. The New York shortstop will try to get on track versus the San Diego Padres tonight in the opener of a four-game series at Petco Park.

Reyes struggled early on in the season and was hitting just .250 heading into May. However, at that point he was in the premature stages of what has become a franchise-record streak, as Reyes has reached base in 35 consecutive games, a club record for a leadoff hitter. He is now batting .285 on the season.

Reyes extended that streak on Tuesday by reaching twice on errors, causing his 18-game hitting streak to come to an end. He hopes he started a new streak on Wednesday after going 3-for-4 with a two-run homer in a 5-3 victory over the Giants.

The shortstop also scored twice while finishing a triple shy of the cycle. Carlos Beltran drove in two runs in a 2-for-4 day, as the Mets won for the seventh time in their last nine games. John Maine (6-4) got the win as he struck out four and allowed two runs -- one earned -- in six innings of work for the Mets.

Reyes, though, is hitting just .228 in 22 career games against San Diego with one triple, no homers and six RBI.

The Mets will hope Mike Pelfrey can find the win column tonight. The right- hander had lost each of his last six starts, pitching to a 6.47 earned run average in that time, before getting a no-decision on Saturday against the Dodgers. Pelfrey limited Los Angeles to a pair of runs on seven hits over seven frames while also striking out six.

The 24-year-old will be making his first career start against the Padres and is 2-6 with a 4.98 ERA this year. However, he has also struggled to an 0-2 mark and 9.64 ERA in three road starts.

Josh Banks will aim to give the Padres another effective outing tonight. In his first start of this year and just second of his career, Banks tossed a complete game against the Giants, holding them to an unearned run and six hits on Saturday. The righty struck out five without issuing a walk, and needed just 101 pitches to go the distance.

Banks, 25, is 2-0 in a start and two relief outings this year and has yet to give up an earned run. He was acquired by San Diego off of waivers from Toronto.

San Diego enters this series having defeated the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday to end a three-game slide. Brian Giles had two doubles and scored the go-ahead run in the eighth inning of a 2-1 victory.

Scott Hairston added a solo home run and Kevin Kouzmanoff had the winning RBI.

Despite a no-decision Greg Maddux was solid, going seven strong frames and giving up just one run on three hits while fanning four batters. Heath Bell (3-3) got the win as he pitched a perfect eighth and Trevor Hoffman earned his 12th save of the year with a scoreless ninth.

The Padres began a 10-game homestand with that set against the Cubs and are 14-17 at home this year.

San Diego won four of six versus New York last year, taking two of three at home.
