(Sports Network) - The San Diego Padres will try to extend their season-long winning streak tonight, when they begin a three-game series with the Los Angeles Dodgers at Petco Park.
The Padres dropped the first two tests of their current 10-game homestand, but have roared back with five wins in a row. That includes four straight 2-1 victories -- the first time in major league history that has occurred -- and an 8-6 victory on Sunday that completed a four-game sweep of the New York Mets.
Tony Clark slammed a pinch-hit, three-run homer in the bottom of the eighth inning to lift the Padres. Jody Gerut finished 3-for-5 with two runs batted in for San Diego, which hadn't recorded a four-game sweep at home against the Mets since September 4-7, 1980.
Clark's homer made a winner out of Carlos Guevara (1-0), who pitched a scoreless top of the eighth. Trevor Hoffman picked up his 14th save of the season with a scoreless ninth.
San Diego's recent winning streak does not include a victory by tonight's starter, Greg Maddux. In fact, the right-hander has posted four straight no- decisions despite a 2.31 earned run average in that span.
Maddux hasn't won since May 10 and faced the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday. He gave up just one run and three hits over seven innings, but left with the score even at 1-1.
The veteran also has a stellar 1.73 ERA in six home starts this year, but is just 1-0 in that span.
Maddux beat the Dodgers on April 13 behind five shutout innings and is 16-8 with a 2.88 ERA in 35 career starts against the club he spent part of the 2006 season with.
The 42-year-old will be countered by 20-year-old Clayton Kershaw, who is still in search of his first career victory. The rookie picked up his first major league setback on Wednesday, even though he gave up just two runs on five hits over five innings of a 2-1 decision against Colorado.
The lefty makes his fourth start of the season and second on the road tonight. He faces a hurler in Maddux who owns 350 career wins.
The Dodgers split a four-game series with the Cubs over the weekend, losing Sunday's finale by a 3-1 score.
Dodgers starter Brad Penny (5-8) gave up six hits and three runs in six frames, fanning five and walking three to lose his sixth straight decision. Juan Pierre went 2-for-4 and scored the lone run for Los Angeles, which has dropped 12 of 17.
Newly acquired infielder Angel Berroa made his debut with the Dodgers on Sunday, going 0-for-3 with two strikeouts. Los Angeles, which has struggled in replacing injured shortstop Rafael Furcal, dealt minor league infielder Juan Rivera to the Royals on Friday for the 2003 American League Rookie of the Year.
The Dodgers and Padres have split six games so far this year, with San Diego dropping two of three at home from April 4-6.
