(Sports Network) - Surprising right-hander Armando Galarraga continues a breakthrough season tonight, when the Detroit Tigers host the Los Angeles Dodgers in the opening game of a three-game interleague series at Comerica Park.

Galarraga reached the big leagues with the Texas Rangers in 2007 and was largely non-descript, allowing eight hits and six runs in 8 2/3 innings over two relief appearances and one start.

He's emerged thus far in 2008, however, winning five of nine starts and allowing just 37 hits and 24 earned runs over 58 1/3 innings in 10 overall appearances.

He defeated Cleveland, 5-2, in his last start on June 8, allowing four hits and two runs in 5 2/3 innings.

Galarraga has never faced the Dodgers.

Los Angeles, meanwhile, counters with long-time former American Leaguer Derek Lowe, who was drafted by Seattle in 1991 and later spent 1997-2004 with the Boston Red Sox.

The 6-foot-6, 230-pound righty is 7-1 with nine saves and a 1.82 earned run average in 28 career meetings with the Tigers -- nine starts -- allowing 66 hits and striking out 69 batters in 94 innings.

He came to Los Angeles in 2005 and won 16 games for the Dodgers a year later.

He's won two straight starts in June since a four-decision losing streak in May, downing Colorado and the Chicago Cubs while giving up 11 hits and four runs in 15 innings.

On Thursday in San Diego, Jake Peavy was brilliant in his first game back in almost a month following an elbow injury, as the Padres defeated the Dodgers, 9-0, to take the final two of a three-game set from PETCO Park.

Hiroki Kuroda (3-6) took the loss after he was touched for six runs on five hits in just 2 1/3 innings of work. James Loney had two of the five hits for Los Angeles, which has dropped two in a row and three of its last four overall.

In Detroit, Miguel Cabrera's one-out solo home run in the bottom of the ninth gave the Tigers a 2-1 victory over the Chicago White Sox, completing a three- game sweep.

Detroit's Kenny Rogers pitched eight innings, giving up one run on four hits and a walk, but did not get a decision. Todd Jones (2-0) pitched a scoreless ninth, allowing one hit for Detroit, which has won five of seven on its 10- game homestand.

These two clubs are meeting for the first time since the Dodgers took two of three at home from June 6-8, 2005. They haven't met in Detroit since the 2003 season, a three-game sweep for LA.
